Yakitori Torishin

Social Profile:

In Japanese, “Tori” means “Chicken” or “Bird” and “Shin” means “Spirit”. Torishin is a Japanese Yakitori (grilled chicken) restaurant, but it’s not just an ordinary restaurant. Torishin started its history in Tokyo, and earned compliments from our clients in the fiercely competitive Tokyo dining scene. Our dream was to share this experience with the Big Apple when we opened our first restaurant in 2007 on 1st Ave. Since then our reputation has grown and been rewarded with popular acclaim from diners and a covenanted Michelin star. Our mission is to provide the most authentic Tokyo style Yakitori to our guests using ingredients of uncompromisingly high quality. Hence our name, Torishin. Please visit us and experience the real Yakitori.

Sophisticated Japanese eatery offering charcoal-grilled skewers & sake, plus a chef’s-choice option.

My husband and I are huge yakitori fans, and have visited a few high quality omakase in both Tokyo and NYC. We went for the private omakase, food is good, but just a little short of being top notch.

Best dining experience I’ve had. Some restaurants that have a tasting menu/fixed price only has some dishes that are good and others that are stale in taste.

I chose the table seating but if I have another chance I will definitely be sitting at the omakase counter. Overall the food was amazing. I am not quite sure about the radish sides. They did not taste of any sauce or marinade, just plain raw vegetable. The “oyster” chicken skewer was the best dish of the courses. I really enjoyed all of them though. I do think could be slightly cheaper considering that the main ingredients are chicken.

We had the omakase and the service was attentive but so slow. Probably the worst bite of scallop I ever had in recent memory that it prompted me to write this review. First off it’s over cooked and rubbery. For $24 you expect more, a lot more. They tell you to drink the sauce but I don’t want to drink buttered soy sauce. The skewers were hit or miss as well as the chicken heart being the only clear winner. What I don’t understand is how you mess up the oyster.

We were able to snag a omakase counter spot for a Wed night dinner. As a note they have 2 seatings for omakase a night due to the fact that they use binchotan charcoal and get it ready for each service.

Awesome yakitori place where you have a 6 course omakase (chefs menu). The Grade A5 Wagyu was excellent. Well worth it.

EDIT: The manager reached out to me and apologized for how the assistant manager handled this, and also let me know about the changes Torishin now made including changing the charcoal supplier, drying the charcoal in the sun for a day to reduce moisture, and a new cover for the grill. Hopefully, dangerous charcoal won’t be an issue in the future now with these changes.
