We have been patrons of Madame Matisse for several years and have generally found the food to be quite good and the prices reasonable. Unfortunately, our visit today for breakfast was disappointing.

The vitrine where pastries are usually displayed was completely covered with a canvas, with tall sculptures placed in front of it to keep customers at a distance. The place felt deserted; in one section of the dining room, chairs were stacked upside down on several tables, adding to the impression that the restaurant was not fully operational.

We ordered café lattes but were informed that the espresso machine was not working and that only drip coffee was available. While we accepted this, the coffee tasted acidic, as if it had been sitting on the warmer for quite some time.

For food, we ordered the egg and bacon breakfast and a granola parfait. The eggs were overcooked and served with a salad, but no toast or other accompaniments. The granola parfait consisted mostly of yogurt, with only a few flakes of cereal.

Overall, Madame Matisse was clearly not at its best today. We plan to return in a few days to see whether this was an isolated incident, as we genuinely hope this establishment continues to be as successful as it has been in the past. The service industry is unforgiving, and maintaining consistency is crucial—once negative experiences begin to accumulate, they can quickly harm a restaurant’s reputation and make recovery difficult.

I love this place! The staff is kind, and the pastries are the perfect start to a busy day. I needed something special for a party that evening and was pleased to see Madame Matisse was open on Thanksgiving Day! I had a few pastries packaged to enjoy later and also bought a wonderful cranberry apple tart for the Thanksgiving party that evening (it was a hit!). The French lady behind the counter was very busy, and we offered to wait a few minutes to make her morning easier. It was worth it! She was super nice, and we enjoyed a brief conversation while paying for the order. I always enjoy coming here. Madame Matisse offers everything from a full breakfast to a simple pastry and coffee. Hint: The apricot pastries are fabulous!

Have been coming here for a couple of years, now. I’ve always had very good food here. Lately it seems very hit or miss. The pastries as usual were delicious. Coffee was cold. Service was very bad today; it was if we were not there. The bahn mi is no longer served on a (delicious!) baguette; today it was served on ciabatta that was more like a soft roll. Not a good change.

If you like French pastries, this is another great bakery/restaurant in Santa Fe. The drip coffee is excellent and the ambience is casual with lots of art on the walls. I’ve had good service during my visits but can see how service might suffer during busy times (it’s a small place with a small staff, so be patient – the food is worth the wait).

The pistachio-chocolate croissant was a revelation, seriously. Easily as good as Mille or anything else I’ve had in town. Docked a star because the cappuccino was more of a cafe au lait (though still delicious). My server was extremely kind. Looking forward to trying their savory food next.

Today was our first time there and it wouldn’t be the last. While waiting for our car to be fixed nearby, we went to Madame Matisse for an early lunch. French Onion Soup, Eggs Benedict and Croque Madame were all great. Delicious and full of flavor. We also bought a few Danish pastries to go. They were the best I’ve had since a while.

Wonderful food at very reasonable prices. We sure will be back.

We tried Madame Matisse for the first time, last weekend. The croque monsieur, the steak and the turkey sandwich were all great! The oriental chicken salad was lacking. The chocolate chai tea was delicious and so was the chocolate croissant. The other pastries were sub-par and pricey. The macaroons were probably the worst, they were very chewy tasted several days old. Our waitress was not great, we had to keep asking for water and she only came to our table twice, even though they were slow. She would just disappear the back, the lady running the counter was more attentive. Also, when we got our bill there was a bunch of random charges that would have cost us $24 extra if we hadn’t paid attention.

We love Madame Matisse. You can always get a table and something fabulous from the pastry case, but we also dig the omelets, salad, quiche… We return again and again and are never disappointed.
