An excellent place to visit, the food and the service are very good, I give it 4 stars only because I asked for the steak medium well and they didn’t give it to me in that term, otherwise it’s an excellent place.

This place wasn’t bad BUT it wasn’t the best place we’ve ever been either. We had reservations and got there a little early. There were a bunch of empty tables and one large table that was taken up. We were sat in a waiting area behind some empty tables. After a while we were seated in one of the empty tables right in front of us.

I stopped in for lunch, passing through town on my way to Roanoke Rapids. I wish could remember the name of my server. She was great, friendly, courteous, all the good things. Made me a fresh pot of coffee too! The food was amazing. Had the Bologna & Egg sandwich. If I ever drive that way again I will definitely stop in to have a bite to eat.

The Hen and the Hog is one of those hidden gems that, once you find it, you will want to go again and again. I had a reservation for 5:45 on a Saturday night. I got there about 5:30 but even though the place was completely empty I was still directed to bar to cool my heels. Good move because I got to try the wines I was going to have with dinner. BTW, the whites are stored In a refrigerator and rhe read are not chilled at all. Oh well. The selection is decent but not great. The prices are right though. Anyway you will come for the food. The chef had just switched to the summer menu so most everything was new. Something not new were the Fritters. This is a staple on the the menu and well worth it. The red pepper jam was tasty but not as hot as I like. Thr fritters were crispy and yet creamy on the inside. Don’t forget the candied peppers. Next I tried the house made soup which that night was a beef stew. This was a different take on the classic…broth and mushrooms accompanied the tender beef bites. I would have preferred more beef and less potatoes. I had my eye on the blackened haddock and risotto. I was not disappointed. The fish was flaky and full of flavor (even though I would have loved even more blackening). The salsa was amazing the the risotto was cremy and enjoyable. I finished off a quality meal with a bowl of cinnamon ice cream and Kahlua… what a combo!

Solid dining option and on the higher end for the area. Food was good. Main course was sizeable portions but apps were on the smaller side. Would definitely come again as there aren’t many other places of this caliber in the area.

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner and drinks here. Everything was incredible and we can’t wait to come back with some friends. The restaurant is a little out of the way in beautiful historic Halifax but it is definitely worth it.
