Social Profile:

STEPCHLD is a slightly off-kilter concept using primarily American cooking techniques to make elevated expressions of simple dishes reimagined with international flavors and fusions. Served alongside our exploratory menu are some of the best soulful wines derived from domestic west coast wineries and a niche but impressive lineup of cider and beer.

Elevated haunt with industrial features, wall art & plant accents, doling out fusion fare & wine.

This spot is top notch. Fantastic food with a really chill vibe. Loved dinner in the past, so checked out brunch and it does not disappoint. Chilaquiles were flavorful with great texture, pork belly and coconut rice was perfectly balanced with a ton of flavor. Bottle of mimosas is a perfect idea so you can juice your bubbly as much (or little) as you prefer.

The brussel sprouts appetizer is very good- though I would have preferred it without the apricot.

Can’t say enough good. Ambience is intimate and welcoming. Limited seating but inclusionary with their adorable waiting spot and the hostess was quick to tell us it was okay that we didn’t have a reservation and went to work right away finding out a realistic wait time which was like 5 minutes maybe less. Just enough time to take some pictures. Waitress was understandably enthusiastic about their offerings and after the brie cheese appetizer covered in pear jam served on a hot skillet (pictured) I’ll never be the same. House made Dill Pickles on the burger was a perfect highlight to an otherwise traditionally made and perfectly executed burger. I don’t remember the name of the pasta but the one with shallots in the description was also simple and luxurious. Our hotel had no microwave which is why I can vouch that it was even better cold. ☺️

All I can say is, “Can I have sweet potato fritters for breakfast?!” Those bites were alternately like a ball of sweet potato pie or a decadent french toast or the best sweet potato fries ever. Don’t miss out! Paired with an orange wine was a perfect combination.

Food was delicious! Great menu. The only downside I had was the brussels needed a little more salt and they don’t have a liquor license. Would have liked a whiskey cocktail.

I likely don’t have enough characters to describe all of the things we love about Stepchld, so I’ll start with what has not changed or shifted since our very first experience over a year and a half ago. I appreciate the small, but thoughtfully curated menu – you’re never overwhelmed by choices, but know that no matter what you choose – it will be a great choice. The carefully selected wine list (the Cab Franc is my recco for sure), and the flavors and unique menu offerings provide an experience whether you are visiting for happy hour on a Monday or a nice dinner on Friday night. If you are feeling a burger or something a bit fancier like the shrimp nori, you won’t regret your order. I have recommended the Tiger from Burma salad to anyone and everyone that will listen. Another thing that has been consistent since our first visit is the service. We have come to know the bartenders and servers by name, and they always provide a welcoming and comfortable experience – no matter how busy they are (which is often!). And that brings me to my favorite thing about Stepchld – it’s the vibe, the feeling, the culture – whatever words you use to describe the feeling and the being of a place…Stepchld has it! You can show up in your most comfortable clothes for happy hour or show up in your best look for a date night or girls dinner – and you feel COMFORTABLE! It’s hard to describe – but few places just get how to make everyone feel like they belong. Stepchld provides not only a diverse food and beverage experience – they welcome a diverse guest base, where you always feel like you are welcome and like you can just BE you and soak in the experience. It’s our go-to at least once a week, and every time we are there – we have a great experience.

I visited Stepchld in Minneapolis, the recipient of the 2022 Critics Choice Award, with lofty expectations. The appeal was undeniable, but the reality was a stark contrast. The Birria tacos, a culinary delight elsewhere, were disappointing here. The portions were meager, making the hefty price tag feel unjustified.

We really loved Stepchld. The sweet potato fritters were amazing. We came for the Cooper burger, which unfortunately fell a bit short for us. There was barely any cheese on the burger, and it was very bland. Not a whole lot to it. The fries are great, especially with the gojujang aioli.

The food is cooked to perfection – unbelievably tender meat, dreamy textures, and profound flavor. The Ethiopian Birria tacos are the best Birria I’ve had in the Twin Cities so far, although I haven’t been to Las Cuatro Milpas yet. We’ve had their Loop Burger, Minneapolis Beauty Burger, and the pork belly kimchi bowl as well which were also superb.
