Really nice sake bar. We went during the afternoon on a Saturday and had the whole place to ourselves – so definitely a night spot but was still nice to have the spot solo.

Stopped for a quick bit around 4pm. I was the only one in the restaurant however as I was leaving the happy hour crowd was arriving. I was hoping for happy hour food specials, but they only had drink specials. Food was fine but a bit pricey.

Stumbled upon this spot, bartender was super friendly and invited us in for Happy hour. Drinks were strong, tasty, and vibe of the place was romantic which we enjoyed.

Atmosphere and decor is nice. However, it took them forever to take our order and bring our food, despite not ordering much and the place being empty. The California roll was pretty average. Chicken karaage was tiny portion for price, and overfried / under flavored. My uni was bitter…. And they said it’s supposed to be like that? Sure, once it’s been sitting a while and gone bad. Anyway, avoid this overpriced joint, there’s a bunch of other better ones in NYC

Cute cozy spot tucked into Chinatown. Friendly on the budget and the sushi is good quality. The appetizers and bar drink are incredible however. I recommend the octopus karaage. Crunchy and flavorful.

Rare find in Chinatown – a premium sushi spot that offers the Omakase experience. This place had nightclub vibes walking in with the bar counter right at the entrance and the neon lights. Lends a cool/dimmer lit dining room. Menu offers great snack and appetizer choices. Rice bowls and sushi a la carte or custom rolls. I enjoyed my uni and scallop bowl with the chefs choices. The wagyu sushi was good but not as flavorful as I hoped. Salmon skin salad was good – just need to mix the soy sauce based dressing more with the greens. Drink Menu doesn’t disappoint!

Excellent family owned and run Japanese restaurant with great food, sake, and vibe. The Ahi Tower (pictured) is delicious! I’d go to Shinsen any day and every time over waiting in line for Joe’s next door (better xiao long baos can be found elsewhere).

I’d give this place 50 stars if I could! I hosted my 30th Studio 54 / disco-themed birthday dinner + karaoke in the back room & Tony (the owner) & his team went above & beyond to make my day special. If you’re looking for amazing service, better food and the ability to personalize & transform a space for a private event, Shinsen is your place!
