Reviews
I consistently, at least, get the drunken chicken every time. You can’t go wrong with any of the options. Recommend a half and half if you like variety.
I was so excited to try this place based on the reviews. The staff were wonderful and kind. They gave me a HUGE plate of half and half (spinach/mushroom etouffee & drunken chicken) and double garlic bread. The flavors were good (not great, but still yum) and the portion was generous.
I was satisfied until about 30 minutes later…
I had to clench for my LIFE!! I thought I wouldn’t make it to a bathroom in time, woo Lord. This was the first thing I had eaten all day, so it definitely didn’t sit well with me. It was so bad I ended up having to come home and nap after. Not sure what happened with the food, but this tainted my experience. :/
I stopped in during lunch (12:30 pm) and was simultaneously please and dismayed that every table in the restaurant was full! I had wanted to dine in. Upon approaching the ordering counter, I was greeted by Eric, an employee who has worked for Yats for 13 years, 10 years at this location, and also received a shout out from the cook through the expo window. I told Eric it was my first time visiting any Yats, and although there was a queue building behind me, he greeted me like he was inviting me into his home. He explained to me that Yats is Cajun food with a Midwestern twist, which means not quite as much heat. But they had a serious hot sauce bar for those who wanted to bring the heat on their own. I thought, “Surely they don’t greet and take this kind of time with every customer,” but I was wrong. Eric sustained his Midwestern care for each customer, calling everyone by their first name, making everyone feel like they’d been friends for years.
After ordering, Eric asked if I wanted to eat there or take it to go, I glanced at the full dining room, saying I’d hoped to eat there, but … and before I could finish, the cook had already rushed my steaming meal to a table, claiming a seat for me before it was snatched up.
After gathering a small assortment of hot sauces, I thoroughly enjoyed my delicious meal. The Drunken Chicken was flavorful and mild. The Jambalaya had a ton of flavor and enough heat to make my nose run a bit. The Jambalaya was a bit tangier than I was used to, but it was still delicious. The lightly toasted bread was soft on the inside, allowing it to hold a generous pool of rich Cajun butter.
Eric thanked me for coming before I left and reminded me that this location is the original and busiest Yats. I guess Yats has sold franchise rights, and the franchised locations don’t always adhere to the same ideals as the original, family-owned locations. He specifically said you can expect continuity of quality and customer care at this location and in Carmel. I decided that I would make the drive to this location every time because it was that amazing.
I highly recommend this Yats location for its tasty, economical food and friendly atmosphere.
We had half and half entree, and two people are a hearty meal for only 11 dollars! For desi janta – if you’re looking for Rajma Chawal with a twist, this place is for you! Good service and ambience. Their sauces and seasonings are too good. Will visit again!
The food was amazing. I highly recommend getting 1/2 & 1/2 platters and then sharing to try a bunch of different things. We got a pint of gumbo, 1/2 each of chicken & chorizo, red beans and sausage, drunken chicken, & moque chou (mock shoe) chicken, all of it served over rice and with the most amazing bread!!!
I can’t wait to go back!!!
OH, AND JACK SENT US!!! Thanks Jack!!!!
