We ordered the lobster cakes to start, which were decent — although, the garnish lettuce underneath was wilted and tased like the bagged lettuce you get from the Walmart salad kits when they go bad. This made me nervous, because we put in the order for the appetizer and entrees all at once, and I had ordered a salad. I was anxious that the salad was going to use this same nasty lettuce.
Unfortunately, my fears were confirmed when the entrees arrived. The lettuce was the same, and the prime rib I got on the salad looked fatty and weird. It was also kind of cold when it came out. The lobster Mac n’ cheese was pretty good. I didn’t eat the salad, as I intended to send it back to the kitchen.
When our server, Tanya, came to check on us after quite some time had passed, she was displeased when we said we wanted to send the salad back. She gave us an attitude, and her entire demeanor changed. She was short and irritated with us, telling us, she’ll “she what she could do” about us sending the salad back.
Eventually, she came back with the bill, and removed the salad from it. Overall, it was a super weird vibe. The atmosphere of the restaurant was strange. The service was super slow, which was weird, because the restaurant was dead between the lunch and dinner rush. From being seated to leaving, it took a whole hour for just two waters, the lobster cakes, and two entrees. Can’t say I will be coming back again.
The owners must eat elsewhere, as if they did the quality of the meals served woud be substantially improved.
It is empty for a reason. As hard as our server worked to make us comfortable, it could not make up for the dismal quality of the Ribs we were served.
The ribs were tough, dry and poorly coated. Even I couldn’t screw ribs up this bad.
To spend $100 for a set of overcooked ribs and a drink is nothing short of foolish. The owners must be considering closing the facility as they are not investing in the basics.
The atmosphere as you enter is rather unassuming but nice. Entering the dining area, though, you get to see where they get the Bistro part of their name. It feels like you enter into an indoor courtyard and really adds to the ambiance. I really enjoyed the decor as well. Very cute all around.
The staff was very pleasant and helpful. Our waitress, Jess, was a delight. She went over the various specialty menus that we got because it was both lunch time as well as spring.
I ended up ordering my usual, the Wilder’s Bistro Melt with chicken. My wife got the BLAT, basically a BLT with avocado. She got the garlic parmesan fries with hers, and I got the regular fries as I usually do.
The first thing I noticed when we got the food was how crisp the toast was. Usually, for takeout, the Texas toast softens a bit by the time we get home with it, which I do enjoy so much to be fair, but this was just as delicious and more satisfying with that crunch. The chicken was thick and juicy as normal for them, and the toppings were fresh and well done. But be prepared with your napkin because these sandwiches are very greasy to the touch! I personally don’t mind that, but it’s definitely not a meal you eat while on your phone. It certainly earns its place on the comfort food menu!
My wife really enjoyed her BLAT, too. The ingredients seemed very fresh and well presented.
We both got full enough on just half of our meals, so if you don’t want leftovers, consider splitting an entrée and maybe dessert while you are at it. The appetizers are normally pretty fantastic as well, so you can’t go wrong on either side of the main course.
They have some great options for the kids, too. I would recommend the Mac and cheese, which comes with garlic Texas toast and grapes, and the toast is worth the meal in and of itself.
All in all, I will always recommend Wilder’s in Appleton if you are up for some great quality food that fills that comfort niche without being super unhealthy. Whether eating in or taking out, you will be in for a tasty treat!
He saw a segment on local news. Knowing I have a preference for flavorful and original foods options, he had to take me. Our dishes were fantabulous! I had the catfish dish. He had the Smokehouse meats (BBQ ribs and andoullie sausage. Can’t forget the sides and cornbread, slaw, baked beans and no dish is complete without black eyed peas! Hearty servings, had to get boxes.
Looking forward to the next time!
