The name Wau is inspired by the intricate Malaysian moon-kite of the same name, often decorated with beautiful floral designs. Flown in celebration of a bountiful harvest, Wau are symbolic of beauty, grace and good fortune. A much-anticipated occasion, the flying of the Wau offered an opportunity for padi planters and farmers in the field to take a break and observe the beauty of these handmade kites. At Wau, our team are looking to offer a similar experience to diners—a respite from the busyness of everyday life and a comforting oasis that celebrates culture, tradition and lift your spirits as high as a kite reaching for the moon.

This is an excellent Indonesian restaurant and is highly rated for good reason. We ordered two of the daily specials, and they both tasted delicious and we felt like it was a great deal for the area. My wife very much enjoyed all the fancy non-alcoholic drink options they had.

Beautifully appointed restaurant, inside and out. I’ve been to a bunch of Indonesian / SEA fusion restaurants in NYC but this was the first time I’d encountered salt+pepper fried young coconut on the menu. It was really interesting and delicious!

I will certainly be coming back to this place when I’m on the west side of manhattan. It was a delish meals. It was 3pm when we arrived. Tried to go to two other restaurants in the area for them to be closed until 5pm. Glad I didn’t go to those others. This will certainly be our spot when we are in this area.

Great gem of a place with delicious & unique food! I specifically looked for an Indonesian restaurant while visiting NYC because its a hard to find cuisine in the US, but I’ve had it a few times including in Indonesia. Food was great, very flavorful. We got the Nasi Campur which was great to try a lot of small dishes, great chicken with coconut and peanut flavors & the food had a nice spice level that wasn’t too strong but flavorful. Also got the Singapore Black Pepper prawns and the sauce was rich, slightly on the sweeter side. We got coconut rice which paired well with prawns but wasn’t as strong coconut as Burmese coconut rice. Cocktails were very refreshing. Good service and the outdoor covered patio is very cute. I definitely recommend this place if you’re in the area and want to try some different food!

Great flavors with the right of sweetness, spiciness and temperature. Been to Indonesia several times over the years…I like their attempt to bring a bit of Indonesia to NYC.

Don’t order Roasted Hainanese Chicken Rice, it’s dry. And roasted. If you’re gonna remix a classic dish, it better be amazing. It’s not. The Nasi Goreng was just ok. It’s pricey for what it is, average.

The Fish curry (seabass) was to die for. Excellet taste & presentation. The chicken bumbu rujak was also delish. The price was quite high, but it measures up with the taste & service. Great job Wau. Thanks

I came for restaurant week and I’d like to say they provided the best deal out of all restaurants I visited over the years for restaurant week. 2 drink, appetizer and entrée; everything was so delicious I had to try their dessert also (I never get dessert). Though the food was delicious this drink was my favorite thing on menu, in fact I’d say it’s my favorite drink thus far. I will certainly be back.

Excellent Malaysian/Asian fusion cuisine with rich flavors and unique interpretations. The ingredients were fresh and the service was very good. The space is a little tight but the attached sidewalk covered outdoor seating has a lot more elbow room if needed. Will be back soon.
