I saw other reviews about slow service but I found the opposite. The waitress was pleasant and attentive. The food quality was definitely not as good as similar restaurants.

Update. My ratings have slightly improved. We’ve been dining at Umi Japanese Steakhouse for many years over 10+. They have finally upgraded their old worn, rundown chairs. That’s a plus! The food was good and the chef was very entertaining. I was surprised to learn at the end when it was time to pay. The restaurant automatically included the gratuity on our checks. Our reservation was for a party of 4. I don’t believe I saw a sign posted stating gratuity is automatic regardless of the party size and the server definitely didn’t mention the gratuity to us. Because I order the same dish every time, I never bothered to open up the menu to see if it was listed anywhere inside. So, I honestly can’t say if it was listed somewhere on the menu. I don’t mind tipping, however, if a party is under 6 or 7 like any other decent upscale restaurant, Umi shouldn’t assume we would tip at their preselected rate/percentage. What if the server, service or food were subpar? Have you ever experienced a similar experience at Umi with regard to gratuity and smaller parties? Diners be aware.

Food: not much flavor to anything. We got the standards, edamame, fried rice, gyoza, miso soup, and tempura. Only thing that was not bad was the gyoza, everything else was almost uneatable. We asked to get the tempura taken off because we thought it was the sushi roll but it was not, and management refused.

Service: the waitress was very nice and attentive, but we asked a couple questions about the menu and didn’t get any answers. Food came out fast, but maybe they should have take another beat on it.

Atmosphere: very worn down. We sat near the fountain that was nearly empty, other than a thin layer of gross water and soggy candy wrappers. The menus were torn up, drawn on, and had stickers on them to change the price of items.

And for this we payed $75 dollars.

We got $150 worth of sushi delivered. The pieces were gigantic, way too large to be comfortably eaten. This was said by our party of experienced sushi eaters. The pieces had to be cut up with a fork -super horrible experience.

The rolls were packed in containers so tightly that some were almost just a blob of rice and sushi goo.

Thirdly- the rice was not very good. The consistency was pasty and rolled too tight. It didn’t have a good feel in the mouth and didn’t fall apart reasonably like it should. We all had better sushi from Wegmans.

Overall a horrible and expensive experience.

My boyfriend and I ordered the Umi Supreme, which is filet mignon, lobster, shrimp and scallops. We both ordered our steak rare. It was given to us very well done. The cook didn’t understand when I asked for him to make ours rare again. I had to flag down our waitress when I finally found her and explained about our steak. She said she might be able to have another one made for me because it was sitting on my plate, but told me that my boyfriend couldn’t because he ate his steak. I explained that he ate it because he was hungry and we couldn’t find a waitress. She was rude but brought me one side of filet finally. I will never go back again because she was so incredibly rude and wouldn’t let me speak to anyone else. Unfortunate because I enjoyed getting sushi there throughout the years. Deeply disappointed.

Fun night at the hibachi table. It’s a good show, the entrees and veggies were good, as was the sashimi. The service was just ok… filet mignon was the star.

Not bad at all.
No waiting time to be seated. (5pm) Couldn’t have the hibachi as I was alone and it seems they only do groups but that was okay.
Ordered and my meal was ready very quickly..I changed somethings in my order to suit my taste and they had no problems with this. Servings are the size you would expect in a up scale restaurant. (Though I wouldn’t class this as up scale.) From what I see, they are trying to market to the younger generation and make it more modern – this is not a bad thing at all and It has no bearing on the quality of food or staff. I ordered a few dishes to try and I was pleased by everything that was put before me taste wise, the presentation needs some work though. It has some nice lighting and so forth and is more modern than traditional Japanese restaurants that I prefer. (I lived in Japan for two years and I am used to the traditional Japanese architectural design) But all in all it is a nice looking place. My waitress was quick and always offered me water and asked if I needed anything.
I gave a 18% tip and no complaints from them with this as I have read in other reviews. All in all it was a pleasant meal.
Would I eat here again? Probably not. My choice to not eat here again is not based on the quality of food or the staff. It is only because I prefer a more traditional Japanese atmosphere.
I do recommend giving the restaurant a try 🙂

Hostess spilled soy sauce all over my friends jeans and said oop and walked away, no sorry, no oh my, just oop after casually knocking the whole cup of soy sauce over and that was it. Stained all over her jeans and purse and it still left a stain. Service was horrible. Didn’t come to ask us if we needed refills, nothing. Just had us order and came to give us our food and that was all. So unsatisfied. Such ignorant and rude employees. Will never be back here ever again regardless of the occasion.

The drinks here were very expensive. 10$ for two shirley temples. They forgot to give me my soup and still charged me for it. Bill was very high when i just ordered a steak. I told him to cook my steak well done and he did not follow and cooked it medium rare. Would not recommend this place to go eat.

Food ok, service good. My concern was with how dirty the tables and menus were. Also, I had four people and they added gratuity and didn’t mention it. I’m a great tipper- but it does frustrate me.
