Cheap and cheerful authentic Ukrainian specialties served in a relaxed environment by ladies who remind you of your aunt or grandma. Long list of soup choices, most of which are vegan. My favourite is either the cold borsch or the borscht. However, the mushroom barley was a choice my grandmother often would make for us.
All of the traditional pierogi varieties are available. The stuffed cabbage, either in the traditional recipe or the vegetarian one made with mushrooms is delicious and generous; with fluffy mashed potatoes and warm sauerkraut on the side. I enjoyed the order of three potato pancakes with sour cream and applesauce, with a side order of sauerkraut and another side of coleslaw. Portions are generous, and the flavours are delicious. I had a glass of Merlot, which was an excellent value at nine dollars. The basket of brown and white bread is perfect for sopping up extra gravy.
Absolutely no room for dessert.
I surveyed the crowd and saw everything from young millennials to elderly couples on the Saturday night that we were there. Service is never rushed, and as I hadn’t seen my companion for a while, we were catching up and when we asked for a minute, she only returned when we showed that we were ready.
Toilets are downstairs, so I’m not sure if there’s an option for mobility challenged individuals.
My buddy told me that if I wanted to add the tip to the credit card to indicate how much before passing the bill and the card to them.
Even though the space is bright and a bit noisy, we were at a table in the corner and able to converse easily, as there is sufficient space between diners for some privacy.
I can’t wait for a return visit, to try a few more of the menu items. If you have any European heritage, dining here is like a warm hug, and the comfort foods of your grandmother come back to life.

Incredible Ukrainian food! You do not need to wait in line at Velselka, just go a couple places down to find this hidden gem. The service is spectacular and the food is authentic and tasty. Can’t recommend this place enough!

We had a fantastic meal at Ukrainian East Village Restaurant that felt like a warm, homemade journey through Eastern Europe. The pierogi were pillowy and flavorful, with a variety of fillings that showcased traditional Ukrainian comfort food. The potato pancake was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft inside—a great balance. Chicken Kiev was a standout: juicy, rich, and buttery with a crisp coating. The cold borscht was refreshing and vibrant, and the sweet blintzes at the end wrapped everything up on the perfect note. Friendly service and a cozy, old-school vibe made the whole experience feel like a hidden gem in the heart of the East Village.

Excellent homemade Ukrainian food, just like one’s Grandma used to make. The serving size was plentiful and the White Ukranian Cocktail was made perfectly. The potato pancakes and blintzes were superb. My first time having cold borscht and I truly loved it.

Wanted to experience Ukrainian cuisine — but left disappointed

As Ukrainians, we were excited to visit a traditional Ukrainian restaurant and share in the flavors of our culture while visiting New York. Unfortunately, Ukrainian East Village Restaurant didn’t live up to our expectations.

As we entered, we immediately noticed a strong and unpleasant smell in the air, which made it difficult to feel comfortable staying. The atmosphere also felt very outdated — like stepping into a version of Ukraine from many decades ago. While it may have once reflected our heritage, it no longer represents the modern Ukraine we know today.

The interior is extremely old-fashioned, and sadly, it doesn’t capture the real spirit of Ukraine as it is now. In fact, even in Ukraine today, you would rarely find restaurants decorated in this way — it feels more like a time capsule than a celebration of living culture.

Out of respect, we didn’t stay to dine and instead chose another nearby Ukrainian restaurant that felt fresher, cleaner, and more connected to the Ukraine we know and love.

I truly hope this restaurant can one day update both its design and cleanliness, so it can more accurately represent modern Ukrainian hospitality and cuisine.

Food was good and authentic but not exceptional. Combo plate was great to get a taste of what this place offers and the hot borscht was good too. Small size is in my photo.
Waiter wasn’t very welcoming.
Cozy atmosphere in one large room though it is pretty loud with conversation and you can hear other tables easily.
