TRIBUNE IS… Timeless, modern, classic, new. Tribune combines the energy of a classic French brasserie with an approachable American vibe set in an iconic landmark in the center of Oakland with access to California’s year-round agricultural bounty. The menu pairs classic and craveable French dishes like nicoise salad and grilled market fish ala meuniere with American favorites like the perfect hamburger and a California endive caesar. Tribune’s space is a modern take on a brasserie, combining rich materials in blue and gray with brass fixtures and elevated touches.

I’d been looking forward to coming to Tribune since it’s opening and Friday we finally scored a table.

OKO at Tribune surpassed my expectations. I asked the bartender to make me a rum cocktail of his choice: he invented the perfect drink for me. The food was amazing all around. The Brussel Sprout appetizer and the andouille sausage appetizer were both fantastic. The jerk chicken with plantains was delicious and the market fish branzino was beyond amazing.

Hearty portions for a downtown restaurant. Glad it is back up since the COVID-19 hiatus. Beer offerings could be improved considering the numerous micro breweries in the SF Bay Area and beyond. The Niçoise salad missed the hard boiled egg, the radishes, the green beans but it was a fair creative departure from the tradition with snap peas and early girl tomatoes. The black cod was surprisingly undercooked nearly raw sushi grade, unclear if that was the intention? Where is the side lemon wedge? The generous French fries basket could have benefited from additional sauces especially of the pigmented kind. The waiter was super friendly and engaged. The building is a landmark to journalism in the East Bay when the people had a voice through a newspaper rather than in online forums.

This was an interesting experience. Staff was friendly, but a little slow considering the number of customers wasn’t large…we had a large group of 12-14 people, so I do take that into consideration. They accommodated our group by condensing tables which was much appreciated. We went for happy hour and basically only had 2 rounds of drinks (and a couple of appetizers) when we likely would have had 3 with a quicker rotation. Food was excellent and each item was something I would recommend. Looking forward to going back to try again.

Definitely a special occasion type of place. Somewhere where you develop a relationship with the waiting staff and trust their recommendations. We did the brussel sprouts, the crispy fries, the truffle risotto, and the amandine with a dessert of the toffee cake & homemade vanilla ice cream.

Came here with the wife during Oakland’s restaurant week after reading a few reviews. We were sat right away after they confirmed we were vaccinated and the menu was explained to us. We were going to order from the restaurant week menu but they said they prefer everyone at the table to order from it and the wife didn’t like one course, so we ordered from the regular menu. For drinks the wife ordered the ward’s way and I ordered Leo’s ramble. We both preferred Leo’s ramble. We started w/a caesar salad which was ok, it had a bitterness to it that we didn’t enjoy. For entrees the wife had the hand made cavatelli, which she said tasted undercooked. I ordered the burger, which was a special and of course added cheese and bacon. It was a pretty good burger althoigh the sweet potato bun started falling apart towards the end. Atmosphere was nice and our server was great.

Love the ambient. Love the Monday Jazz. They opened until 9.30pm if the band is playing. The food is okay too. The service is great.

The Brussels sprouts are not to be missed. I love how they’ve infused subtle Indian flavors into the dish. Amazing. They do a great smash burger. It’s bigger than is usually possible for a smash and seasoned very well. Fries are delicious too. Cocktails are beautifully crafted and delicious. They have some great spirits in stock. Their twist on the Bees Knees is a can’t miss.

We had Valentines Day dinner here and could not have been more pleased with our experience. We had a table reservation but arrived early and started with drinks at the bar. James and Chauncey were so attentive and inviting that we actually had our entire dinner at the bar. The food was impeccable and the music was live! 5 stars, we can’t wait to come back again!
