When dining here you must get the cheese curds as an appetizer. Follow that with the popper burger you won’t be sorry. Our waitress was just the nicest as could be. The atmosphere is nice very beachy vibes. They have an outdoor area looks like it would be fun to sit out on a summer night.

Love everything about this place. Our server, Sadie was attentive and friendly.
We ordered nachos and a burger. The size of the delicious nachos were so large we couldn’t even eat the burger! Got a to go box. Even that was delicious after hours later.
We really enjoyed ourselves on the patio and we’ll come back if ever in the area again.

Traveling through Iowa and we made a quick stop for lunch. The Pelican did not disappoint! We showed up unknowingly before they were open and they still welcomed us in! Sam was our bartender and not only was she very personable she was also very knowledgeable regarding the menu. The rest of the staff seemed very friendly as well and seemed to really enjoy their jobs. We ordered the pelican burger and the Philly and both were excellent! Definitely worth a stop if you are in West Des Moines!

Wanted something casual vs formal to eat on my birthday. I crave battered fish about once a month and we have always wanted to try Pelican Post. They have all you can eat battered Pollock and shrimp on Fridays. (Also Wednesdays too I believe) There was just a short wait. Cory…the General Manager was walking by and offered the tall small tables….as everyone else wanted the shorter ones. My wife was hungry so we accepted. It was very busy but I was very impressed by the swiftness of the employees. Jordan was our server and was very polite. She very rarely walked by us without either giving us eye contact as if to check on us…or asking if we needed anything. Cory stopped by on his way through numerous times as well… to see if we were being taken care of. Food came quick and we all enjoyed it very much. Noise level…even with a birthday party…was not bad either. The entire time of our visit we were very pleased with the attitude and helpfullness of the staff. Will recommend to friends and will absolutely be back. Thanks Cory and Jordan. ❤️

The staff are still getting their bearings with all you can eat fish during Lent. AND they had opened their patio, which adds another vector. Everyone was kind and they were trying. the food and atmosphere was really good. The rest will come in time. I’d come back.

Onion rings came with no plates to share, and one single napkin among the three of us. I had the Pelican burger. It was the messiest, sloppy burger served in a plastic basket lined with a piece of paper. I had to use a fork to eat it. By the end it looked like I probably ate some of that paper. My beverage was a Long Island Iced Tea which was among the worst I’ve ever had.

We came in mid-afternoon so the place was quiet, which for us is perfect. Appetizers are $3 off during happy hour and they have lots of drink specials as well.
We started off with the bone-in wings, half mild buffalo and half kickin’ bourbon. They were DELICIOUS!! Wings were a good size, flavors were on point, not too hot but just enough kick.
For our main, I got the grouper sandwich. Again, flavor was amazing. The breading was crisp and you could tell it’s hand-breaded. My husband got the mushroom and swiss. They add a horseradish sauce that isn’t overpowering but makes you think, and want more!
The drink menu is extensive, as is their food menu. There are many more things we want to try so we will definitely be back. Bonus: they have a lunch punch card. After 10 lunches your next one is free. The service was excellent and the owner stopped by and chatted with us. You can tell he put his heart into this business just by the quality of the food and the ambience.

What a fun place!! We saw The Adaptors band here on Saturday, July 26, 2025. It was a great patio for outdoor music. We ordered a bunch of appetizers, all delicious, and the great staff kept our drinks refilled as we sang along with the band. I give the band five stars as well. Great venue!

This is a consistently good place to get your grub on for a reasonable price. We’ve been here a few times and everything we’ve ordered has been really tasty. Our last order was their gallon nachos and man are they good! There’s enough for 4 hungry people so we took home some leftovers since there were only 2 of us.

This is my 2nd time at Pelican Post, and both times have been amazing. It’s a great warm season place to go for patio or indoor seating. The windows were open to let in the warm springtime fresh air. (70s in mid-March is a real treat!) The decor inside is exactly what you’d expect from a place with this name. You feel like you’re at a seaside bar restaurant with some aged wood board paneling here and there, and an occasional pelican statue perched in various spots. There are plenty of TVs to watch when the conversation dies down or you’re in the middle of eating any one of their delicious menu items. Our waitress stopped by several times to see if we needed anything else and to make sure our drinks were full. It’s a perfect place to go for a happy hour with family and friends. The first time I visited, they had live music on the patio. I definitely would go back again!
