The Oar is a must-visit spot on Block Island! Located right on the Great Salt Pond, it offers beautiful waterfront views that perfectly capture the island vibe. The atmosphere is casual, lively, and welcoming, with indoor and outdoor seating that makes it an ideal place to relax and enjoy the scenery.
The menu has something for everyone, from fresh sushi and raw bar selections to classic New England favorites like lobster rolls, clam chowder, and seafood platters. Everything we tried was fresh, flavorful, and well prepared. Pair that with a cold drinks, and it’s the perfect island dining experience. A Block Island staple that lives up to the hype.

Jeff was a spectacular waiter. He never made us feel that he was too busy even though it was packed. He made our day with his positivity and smile. The woman behind the bar sadly was blatantly annoyed being there… The girl checking us in was definitely not happy. California rolls were delicious as was lobster rolls. We had dinner one evening and hamburgers were meh…we would definitely go back for sushi … Jeff… And the view

Part of my Block Island tradition is enjoying a lobster club sandwich at The Oar, and this trip I came with a group of nine. When we checked in, we were told we were the only large party, yet we ended up waiting what felt like an hour. When I mentioned this to our waitress, she snapped back that it had been “39 minutes.” I asked her to double-check, and soon after we were told our table was being cleaned and would be ready in 10 minutes.
When we walked up, the manager George, who I’ve seen here throughout more than a decade of visits, was his usual warm and genuine self. He personally apologized for the delay, and that sincerity more than made up for the rocky start.
Once seated, our experience turned around completely. Our waitress Lindsay was an absolute gem! Kind, attentive, and patient, even with three fussy kids in the mix. The food was excellent as always, and The Oar continues to deliver on the reasons it remains a staple in my Block Island rotation.

We enjoyed a great lunch on a high top in the bar area. I was able to have a gluten free Tuna dish, they do offer a gf “soy sauce” option. Service was great and our server was knowledgeable about gluten free options. They do not have a designated gf fryer.
Great atmosphere inside and out. The outside does offer seating with a view and cornhole games for guest to play.

The food is good quality , not quite enough quantity for the price. Prices were in line for what you pay to look out on the beautiful salt pond and marina. Atmosphere is charming but then I like boats.

Second time coming here and probably my favorite dinner and drinks on the island. The sushi is outstanding, the mudslides are the closest thing to perfect that I’ve ever had, the service is great, and the place is so big you don’t have to worry as much about not getting a table on a busy weekend

Stopped in for their famous mudslide and it did not disappoint—perfectly creamy, just the right kick, and exactly what a summer day calls for. Sipping it while taking in the view of the boat basin made the whole experience even better. Great spot to relax, take in the scene, and treat yourself. Highly recommend!

Our visit to The Oar in Block Island was fantastic from start to finish. There was ample parking, and we were seated right away. A friendly waiter greeted us and made us feel welcome. The ambience was delightful, with decor featuring oars. Our appetizers and drinks arrived promptly, and the blackened salmon was absolutely amazing. It’s a must-try for anyone visiting Block Island.

The Oar on Block Island is a true gem, and it’s no wonder it was at the top of our list during our stay at The 1661 Inn. Mudslides and Tuna Nachos might not seem like your typical summer afternoon fare, but at this world-famous spot, it all comes together perfectly! We even indulged in the Jameson cold brew floater, which was a fun and delicious touch.
Located in New Harbor, The Oar has a rich history that adds to its charm. Originally a casual spot for boaters in the 1960s, The Oar has evolved into a must-visit destination on Block Island. The area itself is steeped in maritime history, with New Harbor being one of the island’s busiest ports. The restaurant’s name comes from the tradition of patrons leaving behind signed oars, which now decorate the space, creating a unique and personal atmosphere.
The Oar’s setting on the water’s edge offers stunning views of the harbor, enhancing the relaxed vibe that draws both locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re there for a casual drink or a full meal, The Oar provides an unforgettable Block Island experience, blending its rich history with the laid-back island lifestyle.
