Finally made it out for brunch! I would suggest making a reservation on a Saturday as there was a little wait but only 15mins. Our waitress was amazing and super attentive. The food was delicious. I had blueberry pancakes, my son chicken tenders, my mom got what I think was called the turnip platter and my godmother got the square dog. We also had fondue but I forgot to take a picture of that. It was all delicious. The brocolli for the fondue was steamed a little too much to dip and kept falling apart but everything else was delicious. My son ended up pouring some cheese over tge brocolli and eating it with his fork. Lol We order dinner often and I always get the beef bourguignon which is my absolute favorite!

Two out of three of our meals were good. I had the mushroom melt on sourdough and fries and it was delicious My son had the Monte Cristo and he loved it and devoured it! My boyfriend had the meatloaf Wellington with waffle fries and green beans. The meatloaf was hard and inedible. The green beans were mushy and cold. The waffle fries were good.
They serve tap water and it has a funny taste. I had an espresso martini which was okay.
It wasn’t too busy but service was a little slow.

Today was our first time visiting, and if in the area, we would definitely go again. We enjoyed the food. The pot pie needed to be warmer and was soupy (didn’t have a crust either) and the potatoes were salty; however, omelets were made perfectly, steak was on point and the portions are ginormous.

Our server Megan was friendly and exceptional. I have a picky family and her service was impeccable. If you see her, give her a fist bump or high five.

A few tables weren’t clean when we came in; however, I would assume that the staff was working tables and didnt get to it.

Overall, it was a great experience, and I highly recommend it.

Traveling home from vacation in Sandbridge, VA, I thought that it would be nice to go off of my main path and stop in quaint downtown Suffolk for lunch.

My wife and I arrived at The Mod Olive (formerly The Plaid Turnip) at post-peak lunch time on a Saturday. We were told by the host that the wait would be 10 min. Looking across the restaurant it wasn’t crowded, a bunch of tables were empty.

The decor was retro 70’s and earlier. There are a lot of cool artifacts on display. A cool feature was the original Star Trek playing in a loop on the tv in the bar area.

We waited for 20 min before we asked if we could be seated. Finally, after 30 min of waiting we were seated and given one menu. I now know what it is like to be invisible, we finally were acknowledged and served water after 5 minutes of servers passing by without even a look or wave. We already committed a good deal of time so we placed our orders with the friendly server.
During the time that we waited, we couldn’t help but notice that the restaurant was far from clean. Cobwebs on most of the decorations and the tables were rustic with chipped paint, and sticky. The host and bus-person used the same rag to wipe multiple tables off and replaced the same rag on the top of the host station(without rinsing).
The fish tank in the bar area was in desperate need of a cleaning.

The Philly Cheesesteak sub was on the greasy side, but had great flavor. Broccoli was fresh and cooked properly. The chicken avacado sandwich had great flavor, the beans were from a can, soft and super salty.

The Mod Olive has a lot of potential, but it needs a good cleaning from top to bottom along with staff training and updated sanitation procedures. I will choose a different place next time I visit Suffolk.

Went here for brunch today and the food, service and ambiance was great!! Try the mimosa flight – great flavors to choose from! Food had great flavors and big servings! The only reason I have four stars on the food is our food came out room temp instead of hot. Still will go back!

Really a terrific place. Great value, great taste, great service. Lovely people.

I’ve only been twice and I had the same thing, the beef stroganoff. Great example of type. The noodles were cooked al denté and the stroganoff was deep and flavorful. The beef was tender and the sauce highlighted all the ingredients.

The salad though! Huge salad before the main appeared. Ate the salad for a while and it seemed almost the same size. No iceberg, just salad greens and friseé. Corn, tomatoes, and cucumbers. A bit of onion would be good for me but not everyone likes that. Cherry tomatoes were sliced so you don’t have to negotiate with the tomato before you poke it with a fork.

Service was sharp and attentive. The server thoughtfully brought a lot more napkins.

I sit at the counter, single diner, didn’t want to take a whole table.

Lovely decor, add to the whole experience.

You should go there if you’re in downtown Suffolk.

We went to Suffolk for a ribbon cutting event For Kids Community Pantry and Fridge. I asked my counterpart Vivi for a good place to eat here and she highly recommended The MOD Olive. We went and it was the best brunch we had in a long while. They have so much good choices that we had a hard time deciding which one to pick. All of us were happy and content with our orders even the picky eater. We enjoyed each others company, the ambience and the food we don’t want to go back to work hahaha.
We are definitely going back!

This place was very unique. The lighting was the biggest downside for me. I really couldn’t see what I was eating. The photos will show. I had the Missile Crisis, which was very unique. I think it would have done better without the pulled pork. The texture was very different. The sauce was and the dell pickle made it though. The fries were really good. But the portion size was way too much. I had the second half of the sandwich for dinner. My wife had the cold plate. She said the tuna salad wasn’t that great and had to be doctor led up when she got home. The pasta and pear salad were good.
I don’t think we will come back though, it just seemed very odd and really didn’t know what to expect with each dish. Maybe I will try the brunch if I come back.

Food is great, the ambience is fantastic and the service was phenomenal. This is my new go-to spot. I will continue to come here for the rest of the menu. The country steak, tater tot dish, the French fries dish, pancake & French toast dish were all excellent!
