Located in the heart of Old Town, The Firehouse has a great setting surrounded by shops and restaurants. The service was friendly and attentive, but the overall experience was “good, not great.”
The ambience feels dated and could use some refreshing, and the two entrees we ordered lacked the flavor we expected. We really wanted to like this restaurant, but the food just didn’t deliver.
That said, its location and service make it worth a try, especially if you stick to their better-known dishes like chowder or burgers.
Where do I even begin. To start, the clam chowder was thick and floury And may have been spotted on an episode of “everybody’s so creative.”
If you like a flour-based clam chowder or you’re from Ohio – then this will be your jam. But if you prefer an actual creamy clam chowder, go somewhere else. This was more like a clam-flavored biscuits and gravy without the biscuits.
And the coleslaw. Oh, the coleslaw. If I wanted bagged shredded cabbage mixed with Litehouse processed coleslaw dressing from the grocery store then I would have gotten myself that. Slimy is never a word that I thought I would use to describe coleslaw. But here we are.
The Mr’s burger was straight from the Costco bulk pack, it had reasonable flavor but it was tucked between a dry bun and loaded with an ungodly amount of Vlassic pickle slices.
When the waitress stopped by she asked about our food I told her about the clam chowder situation. Phew! She seemed to take it very personally and loudly said that I was the first person ever in the whole entire world to not like their chowder and that people come from other states to taste the best chowder they have ever had. So if you like to be shouted at, this is definitely your place.
Listen, I’m tired today, I just wanted to enjoy decent food and instead I got chowder-shamed and the joy of nibbling on some grocery store cafeteria coleslaw.
Thank the universe for some sweet potato fries or I would be writing this with a very empty stomach.
She recommended the deluxe chowder ( i had already ordered the regular, which was good)
I had the cobb salad with chicken (it had a bit of a kick!). My husband ordered chicken Caesar salad ( same type of chx)
The garlic bread was just “ok”
Loved the service and efficiency. I recommend
We had bowls of their amazing clam chowder (best in Florence maybe ) and two orders of fish and chips split for 4. Turned out to be way more food than we needed. The deluxe clam chowder is worth getting with the crab, shrimp, cheese and garlic bread. So good. The fish – wow! Light and crispy breading. Good size pieces. The garlic fries do not disappoint.
Our server was a professional. She paid attention to what we ordered and anticipated that we’d need extra napkins and extra plates and brought those before we even asked. I asked her about the history of the restaurant. My wife could see that she was busy but she still told me the story WHILE cleaning up empty dishes. She never missed a beat. She earned and deserved her tip.
This place is going to be a must stop every time I’m in Florence from now on!
