Reviews
My husband and I came here several weeks ago and were blown away by how good everything was. If you follow my reviews you know that my very favorite thing in the whole world is good fried fish. Ever since I was little it’s been my favorite food!!
The menu had many amazing things to choose from but I chose (guess what) the fried catfish basket. We got an order of onion rings from the appetizer menu; the side I chose was a small corn on the cob. I’m here to tell you the catfish was excellent. I was so excited because I’ve been looking for a good local place for catfish for too long. There are a couple in this town but they only serve fish on certain days.
The only complaint I could come up with was I did not like the tartar sauce. It was brown and had a really odd flavor to it but that wasn’t going to stop me – I’m coming back; I decided to just bring my own tarter next time. The catfish was worth the trip
Fast forward to this visit. My husband is playing in his billiard league tonight so I thought it would be a good night to take myself out for dinner. I decided to go back to the Crab Hut for catfish again. I remembered to take Duke’s tartar sauce.
The place was not very busy. I was kind of surprised because it was just a little past 7:30 and I thought there might still be some lingering dinner guests. I was the only one there.
I ordered the catfish, a bowl of gumbo, with a side of the corn on the cob. The server brought the food out pretty quickly. I dove into the gumbo first and I have to say it was really really good.
It had a big pile of yummy rice in the center. Unfortunately I can’t eat a lot of white rice so I mixed a little bit of it in with the soup and enjoyed every single bite. They had a large shrimp on top of the rice pile, which was a nice little bonus.
Next I jumped on to corn on the cob it was sitting in a bowl of butter or oil and spice. Honestly it didn’t look too appetizing, but I have to tell you it was delicious. Now I like corn on the cob but this stuff was extraordinary.
Now I get to the catfish. I hate to say this but I didn’t like the fish at all. On my last visit I loved loved loved the fish!! I thought it was some of the best fried catfish I’ve ever had. This time I don’t know what happened. It looked dark, and frankly, it kind of reminded me of just frozen filets that they had dropped into a fryer. It seemed a little bit overcooked; it was darker than I expected. It also had kind of a dirty oil taste. I didn’t even finish it. That’s unusual for me with fried catfish, I usually over eat fried fish. Like I said it’s my favorite thing.
I will go back to the crab hut because I found several other things on their menu that I do like. I won’t be ordering the catfish again and that really disappoints me because that’s the main reason I went up there. They have lots of other things to try so I’m not going to write them off yet.
The Crab Hut is a small family owned business, and I like to support them when I can. They are nice people.
My table ordered calamari and hush puppies as appetizers. The calamari were HUGE, and I assume fresh-caught; whereas the hush puppies were tiny, moist, and studded with finely diced green onion. I did try a hush puppy – they seemed to be mostly cornmeal, and had a mild sweetness, not unpleasant.
For an entree, I got the jumbo shrimp boil with lemon garlic butter. When our waitress brought a plastic bag on a platter, it wasn’t what I expected, but it was definitely intriguing! Aquarium take home bag notwithstanding, the food inside was excellent – the seasoning had plenty of paprika and garlic, with just enough spice to make almost anybody, from mild preferences those who prefer more kick, to be pleased.
$35 was a LOT to pay for a “quick bite” for lunch. I guess it’s just a sign of the times.
