It’s a good spot to have drink as order small dishes and chat with friends. It can be loud either music and guests here but that’s the vibe to expect! The staff are extremely friendly and welcoming.
Also I think it’s same owner as the other restaurant “Totoya” at AlaMoana. They have same chopstick box and similar ingredients setup on the table; we happen to visit Totoya yesterday and today we saw the same staff (or owner) at Tenkichi
Izakaya Tenkichi is, without question, the best Izakaya on Oahu. I’m not someone who usually enjoys Japanese food in Hawaii because it never feels truly authentic to me. After traveling to Japan, I pretty much refused to eat sushi or Japanese food here—until now.
The moment I stepped inside, it genuinely felt like I had been transported straight back to Japan. The atmosphere, the staff, the energy—everything was so authentic that my Japanese language immediately came out when I spoke to them. The staff were all smiles, incredibly engaging, and carried a beautiful warmth blended with the aloha spirit.
And the food… oh my goodness. Every dish was unbelievably delicious! The fish was incredibly fresh, full of clean flavor without the heavy, over-seasoned “American” style you find elsewhere. Every bite was so tasty and satisfying—fresh, bright, and perfectly prepared.
I absolutely cannot wait to go back.
If you’re looking for real Japanese flavors and an authentic izakaya experience on Oahu, this is the place.
5 stars, without hesitation!
Standouts:
– the sukiyaki tofu (sleeper hit) — we were accidentally not given the special menu, but this was on it and we got it at the end of our meal and it was still so amazing.
– the yuzu cheesecake — we were stuffed and still scarfed this down. light, not too sweet, fluffy
– roast beef tempura – had this with a side of the fresh wasabi and it was so dope
– the fresh squid tempura was silly fresh and fluffy
– the maitake mushroom tempura was exceptional as well
– the ikura uni hand roll was delightful
sigh it was so good. I wanted to eat so much more. Oh, and the shikuwasa(?) sour was also very yummy. Unsweetened ofc.
And the vibe was also A1. Everyone was lovely and lively. Smiles allll around.
Ok ok that’s all. Wish we had more time to come back. Highly recommend! Ahhh. Make sure you make a reservation.
Medium sized inside with flexible seating and booths.
As for da food, all excellent and fresh. Cannot go wrong.
We came for lunch, and with half the menu dedicated to tempura, I expected it to be a specialty here. Instead, my $27 tempura bowl arrived within 5 minutes of ordering—and it was not crispy at all. It was obvious the tempura had been premade in batches and left sitting, which is unacceptable at this price point.
When I asked the server why it wasn’t crispy, she pointed to the fryer and insisted they fry everything fresh. But the food was neither hot nor freshly fried, and simply having a fryer doesn’t mean the food is made to order. The lack of honesty and accountability made the experience even worse than the soggy tempura itself.
To be fair, the appetizer we had was good—but the main dish and the way staff handled my concern made this one of the most disappointing meals I’ve had in Hawaii. For the price, you can easily find far better food and service elsewhere.
the staff are super bubbly, friendly, and welcoming (the drinks are POURING!). as someone who doesn’t really like the taste of alcohol, i was surprised enough to enjoy the calpico shikuwasa sour so much that i ended up order 3 after eating here 2 days in a row.
the food here is good, with a couple standout rockstars. the tempura unagi was our favorite, but all the tempuras are rather tasty. they do not skimp on the fish here, or anything at all really. prices are generally rather affordable.
it felt more like a “treat-yourself” kind of dinner, but because we were on vacation, this was a-ok. great for couples and groups, and the food and drinks come out FAST!
they even sang to me on my birthday and gave me a complimentary dessert: super sweet people working here. i will revisit and take all my buddies here in the future!
