This place easily is five stars. It’s been around for over 45 years (I believe) and it shows. Everything we got was absolutely phenomenal. The sushi was premium, the ramen was delicious, and we could have gone crazy just eating appetizers. Absolutely obsessed with everything we got and already made a reservation to return. But what I would say is that definitely make reservations. We just happened to go right when they opened but even then there was a line and it was a zoo! But the owner was absolutely a boss when it comes to managing calls and reservations. Highly recommend this place and I definitely will be back!

Hands down, best sushi in NJ. This is the most authentic with the highest quality fish I ever had. It’s to the point you don’t even want the soy sauce or wasabi, the rolls and fish are absolutely the best quality with care taken into every piece. The cooked foods were fantastic as well. Absolutely the best, don’t hesitate to try it.

Good things come to those who wait.
After eating at another establishment not far from here, the name caught our eye. As we walked we noticed a market attached. We proceeded in and bought several things that sparked our interest. As we left we said,
“ let’s come back and eat here one day!”
Yesterday was the day, we stumbled in early and were lucky enough to snag a tiny booth as we had no reservations ( hint ).
We found out after thoroughly enjoying this meal that they have been there over 40 years.
This place was special, spot on, can’t wait to return. Thanks for a great meal and a warm atmosphere.
I see the reviews have been great… here’s one more

I would say the best sushi in Bergen County. Fresh and flavorful. I’ve been here twice this week and will most likely come back a 3rd time. I think the trick is to order the sushi you like and slowly work your way through the kitchen menu.

Tawara is the hidden gem of NJ! I stumbled upon this restaurant during a road trip last year, and have made it a point to return to the area specifically so I can dine at Tawara again. This place makes the list as one of my favorite restaurants of all time. The pork buns are some of the most delicious things you will ever taste. The sunset roll, spicy beef and sashimi have all been fresh and incredible. Everything I’ve tried on their menu is top quality and taste. Raika is also an excellent hostess, bringing a warm and friendly vibe that makes you feel at home. Overall amazing and highly recommended!

This place is 5+++++. Moved to Ramsey in 2022 and this place became our regular. What makes this place special is not just the quality and variety of food but the staff as well. Reika and the team make you feel welcomed and special. Tons of regulars and it creates a very cozy, homey vibe. There is always special fish in rotation and you would never guess that such high quality sushi would exist in New Jersey suburbs. I have nothing but praise for this place. We absolutely love it !

My family went for NYE lunch. We’ve wanted to go for years and finally found the time to. It was amazing! Everything about the experience was amazing. We’ll definitely be returning again soon. I’d highly recommend it if you’re looking for an authentic Japanese meal.

***BEST SUSHI EVER***
Just to preface, I grew up in the area and I have been going to Tawara for the past 25 years or so. I have not returned to the area in many years but I cannot believe how much I have missed the sushi from this restaurant. My wife and I order a lot of sushi all over the US and we have never found sushi as amazing. I also want to highlight that my wife has celiac disease and everyone who worked there was extremely attentive and made sure that we knew we would be safe to order without risk of illness or contamination. The owner/manager even came to talk to us and explained everything they do gluten free for anyone with a sensitivity. I cannot express how much we appreciated the knowledge, kindness, and attentiveness. The quality is unmatched at this restaurant. I will only be ordering from here moving forward and I live an hour away.

Overpriced for the quality and quantity received.
I just moved to the area and called asking for a 3 roll lunch at 1:30 pm on a Wednesday. Instead of letting me know they did not offer lunch rolls, I was charged $30 for the 3 rolls.
Rice was stuffed inside the rolls to increase the amount of rice and decrease the amount of fish.
The quality of the fish was average, and the quality of the sushi rice was below average.

I have been enjoying dining at Tawara for over a decade and this review I should have written years ago. This is by far the best Japanese restaurant in Bergen County and managed by an amazing group of people. Certain dishes like the Pork Belly Buns and their sushi are truly life changing and are worth coming here just for those. There is no Japanese restaurant in our area that can compete against their sushi. Their ramen, miso soup, terriyaki, spicy crunchy bowls, tawara wings, and curry udon have a depth of flavor that leaves you nourished, happy, and improves your day if not your week. My friends and family have spent many nights celebrating our most important birthdays and holidays in their private booths in the back or going on dates in their two person booths near the kitchen. The ambience is low key – traditional Japanese – homie and just a joy to spend time here. If you are looking for a great – go to – always good – Japanese restaurant… You are in luck you have found a real gem, I hope you enjoy! Thanks for all the lovely meals Tawara.
