The original Taco Mac, this location has been serving the Virginia Highland community since it all started back in 1979 when a couple of guys from Buffalo, NY made a pit stop in Atlanta on their way to Florida. After touring the city and enjoying the weather they decided to stay. All they had was a little cash and a great idea to bring a popular northern cuisine to the sunny South. Now they just needed a location to get the ball rolling. It didn’t take long to find the perfect spot, a quaint little taco shack on the corner of Virginia and North Highland Avenues – now known as Virginia-Highland. It is a quiet neighborhood, tucked away like a well-kept secret, and one that welcomed Taco Mac as the neighborhood hangout.

Went here for lunch midweek, around noon. We sat outside and there were only 2 other tables that customers were seated at in our section. I mention this because the wait for our food was at least 25 minutes and just felt like a long time when the restaurant was not really busy at all and its my lunch break. Our service was fine and the waitress was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered the grilled salmon plate chili mango style served with cilantro lime rice, and crispy Brussels sprouts. The fish was well done and I would have been okay with this had the mango flavor been more prevalent to make the salmon more juicer. All I tasted was the chili seasoning. The Brussels sprouts were delicious. Next time If I would choose to order the salmon plate again, I am definitely going with the Cajun rub instead.

This was the worst Taco Mac I have ever been to. When we got there we were told to seat ourselves. The table was extremely sticky and the menus were covered in stains and grime. I had already looked up their hours on every platform I could, the hours on the door said they closed at 12am, and we had called and asked. Our food was brought out very fast and was fine, except my fries were literally DRENCHED in grease, like seriously dripping. There were employees all over, in and out of uniform, throwing things over the bar and yelling. We ate our food and realized they were closing up so we started to gather our things when someone from the kitchen yelled “LEAVE” followed by our waiter very condescendingly saying, “Have a good night!”. Plus our meal was $40 for two people! I understand wanting people to leave when you are closed but there was no indication they were closing, we were very polite and tipped, and was still yelled at. I had just started a new medication, hadn’t eaten in almost a day and had been crying all day. They could’ve just as easily asked us politely to leave. If you want to eat at a restaurant and not a grimy back alley DO NOT go here.

Great service. Lady was training someone and both were doing a great job. I did not know this was the original Taco Mac location. This totally gives off dive bar vibes, small and intimate. Not similar to your average Taco Mac. Will be back!

$15 for an impossible burger and it was not delightful. A sad little bit of caramelized onion, tired looking lettuce and I asked for no cheese and also got no pickles with an undercooked side of tots.

This venue continues to go downhill. Two of us for dinner tonight. One had finished their meal before the other got their meal. Second beer took 15 min to arrive. When I asked why, was told “the barman had just arrived”. I asked the manager who served my first beer and he said he did. I asked why he didn’t serve my second beer and got a blank stare. If you like wings it’s still the best place in the highlands area, just be prepared for less than stellar service.

Ordered through Postmates and got this sad excuse from Taco Mac. They only gave us eight wings (out of the ten we ordered), didn’t even include the ‘79 sauce for the philly egg roll and all the food was packaged horribly and was cold. Very disappointed. Not ordering from here again.
