The first time I ate here, a year ago, the food was good and the server was friendly. I was with a friend and craving a sit down, old school Chinese restaurant so we decided to visit today. What a mistake.
We walked inside around 2pm and the place was empty. There were supplies stacked on two tables in the dining area and no employees in sight. We thought we came in before they opened, so we went outside and checked the hours for Saturday on the window: 12pm to 10pm. We walked back inside and waited some more. A woman walked in from the back door and seated us. Our food came out fairly quickly and we began to eat. We both ordered combos that had a large portion of rice, entree, egg roll and wonton. The food wasn’t as good as I remembered, but it was still ok.
About 10 minutes after bringing our food out to us, the waitress brought us our check. We put a credit card down and continued to eat our food. About five minutes after that, she took the payment, then brought back the receipt and some fortune cookies. She answered the phone and took a phone order, then came to our table and said “Lunch is over. Bye-bye.” We were kind of surprised because we hadn’t even been in the restaurant for 20 minutes. She said “We’re closed for lunch, you need to leave so we can set up for dinner.” She then took all of the plates off of the table (despite the fact that my friend was still eating) and then we left. It’s been my experience that restaurants that close between lunch and dinner will have posted hours to indicate that. Even if it was a recent change, she should have told us they were closing in 20 minutes when she seated us.I will never return to this restaurant.

I finally got to try Ta Chen. I read the reviews beforehand but I was between errands so I only got take out.

I got the sweet and sour pork lunch plate and ordered extra egg rolls and egg flower soup. You could tell it wasn’t some frozen stuff that they warmed up and threw sauce over. The sauce was more sweet than sour but soy sauce fixes everything . The pork was a little bit overcooked but cooked through so that’s okay. The egg rolls were basic veggie and the egg flower soup was piping hot, the way I like it. I can’t wait to go back for a proper sit down meal.

The restaurant reminds me of the old Chinese food places my parents would take us to in Hawaii wayyyy back when. No frills, no extravagance, just freshly made food eaten on Formica covered tables and upholstered benches. It’s a tiny place but the woman that helped me was kind and may’ve been the owner. A good first time experience and alternative to the stuff they sell in those Chinese fast food places where everything tastes the same and costs too much.

We tried this place for the first time and have to say the food was delicious. They have been in business for 40 years! The owner was very friendly. He guaranteed we would love our meal and he was right. The tangerine chicken and beef and broccoli were my favorite dish. Highly recommend you give them a try. I will be back again soon

A man who claimed to be there 40 years, hassled me about me bringing in my Big Gulp soda, saying that the O.C. Health Department didn’t allow it, which I know for a fact isn’t true. I had the BBQ pork egg foo yung for $18.49, which didn’t include rice. They wanted to charge me an additional $3.50 for a side of rice!? It had a subtle bitter taste and used cheap vegetables like carrots, peas and celery. The service was bad because it was non-existent. I didn’t tip, which I only do when the service is terrible. I will never go there again.

Looking for that American Style Chinese food you remember when you were growing up? The one with the zodiac placemats and the Po Po Platter? Minus the place mats this is the spot. I celebrated my 48th birthday there today and couldn’t be happier. The waitress was so nice. Couldn’t have asked for a better early dinner.
