Having called San Diego home for over a decade, my wife and I have explored nearly every sushi spot in town. Sushi Ota remains the gold standard for us, with downtown’s Taka a very close second.
What sets Ota apart is their precision. The shari (rice) is perfectly seasoned, and the fish-to-rice ratio is generous—you’ll never feel like the rice is overshadowing the fish. If it’s your first visit or you’re feeling indecisive, the Chef’s Choice Nigiri is a flawless pick. I also highly recommend the non-spicy Double-Double Yellowtail cut roll; it’s consistently amazing.
For milestone celebrations, their multi-course Omakase is a traditional Japanese journey that is as filling as it is delicious.
Pro-tips for your visit:
Reservations: Absolutely essential for dining in.
Takeout: For those evening you want to enjoy a night in or forgot to make a reservation and cannot get a table.
Parking: The front lot is tight, but don’t forget the extra spaces around the back.

Sushi Ota is our go-to spot for high-quality sushi when we’re in the San Diego area. During our last trip in June, we made sure to include this restaurant in our dinner plans, and it definitely did not disappoint! We tend to order a lot of nigiri here, as the cuts are always fresh, with many pieces featuring extra-long slices of fish that drape over the rice. On this visit, we ordered three servings of scallop (hotate) nigiri and several other duplicates. I always make a point to order ama ebi, one of my favorites. This time, we took an Uber to fully enjoy their excellent selection of sake, which isn’t readily available at many places we visit in Arizona. We enjoyed a bottle with dinner, which elevated the entire meal. If you love sushi and don’t mind splurging, the bill here can add up quickly. However, having dined at many sushi restaurants, Sushi Ota stands out as a top choice and is well worth the premium price.

Sushi Ota is hands down one of the best sushi spots in San Diego. The fish is as fresh as it gets—everything tastes clean, perfectly prepared, and high quality. You can really tell how much care goes into each piece. Parking can be tough and it gets busy quickly, so making a reservation is highly recommended, but it’s absolutely worth the effort. A must-visit if you’re serious about great sushi.

We went on a Thursday night not thinking we’d need a reservation but it was busy! We were told it could potentially be a few hour wait so we started to leave but then thought that we could order takeout. Went back in to confirm and grabbed a menu and order sheet and took it back in. Arisa then told me a table was close to leaving so if we wanted to wait maybe 15 minutes she would be able to seat us! Chizuka was our server and she was great too! Everyone was kind, food was good and price was reasonable for the quality of food and service! Would definitely consider coming back if we are in the San Diego area again! どうもありがとうございます!

This the best authentic sushi spot in San Diego, no contest. My wife and I have tried many in the SD metro area and Sushi Ota consistently stays at the top of the list. Their fish is fresh, perfectly prepared, and the staff is wonderful.
The price is definitely on the higher side but the quality matches what you’re paying for. I’ve eaten here/taken out 4 times and I’m always happy with my meal. The Tokusen Nigiri is my go to.

Sushi Ota …we love it here. The food is superb and honestly reminds us of the caliber of cuisine you come to expect in Japan. Great service, a lively atmosphere, and a really nice variety on the menu. ✨

This is a busy neighborhood Japanese style restaurant. It has a sushi bar and dining room. The menu is extensive with many of the favorites for sashimi, sushi, and cooked Japanese dishes. The fishes tasted fresh, tasty, and well prepared. We had a good experience here.

Sushi Ota still the best food ever!!!! Every bite is like heaven, the ingredients quality simply excellent. Everyone is super friendly, they receive us with a big smile. Make a Reservation in advance.
Each option on the menu is a good choice. I came the first time 15(ish) years ago, you will always leave with a happy smile of good food and happy tummy. The ambience is beautiful, nice and warm. For us, it worth the 3 hours drive to SD!

The best grilled yellowtail (hamachi kama) I ever had. The sushi and everything else are good too! They also provide gluten free sauce and separate all sushi between GF and non-GF in two plates for us – very considerable.
