When you’re paying for a higher-end dining experience and tipping generously, good customer service really matters. A more welcoming and attentive attitude would have made the evening feel complete. Overall, still a great place for the food, but the service could use some improvement.
The quality of the fish is always top-notch, the flavors are clean and balanced, and the presentation is simple yet elegant. Whether it’s sushi, sashimi, or one of their cooked dishes, everything is consistently excellent.
The staff is friendly, professional, and always welcoming, which adds to the overall warm and relaxed experience. It really feels like a hidden gem that hasn’t changed in years, in the best way possible.
This is the original Katsuya, and it truly stands out from the trendier, more modern locations. Plus, parking is super easy. They offer valet service, which is a big plus in L.A.
Must try the fresh shrimp! Sweet like sugar and super fresh.
The service was excellent, from the time we walked in, to leaving, all staff constantly greeted and checked on us to make sure we were doing well.
The grilled green peppers were good, not too spicy.
The sushi was very fresh and tender, and the plates, including teriyaki salmon were tasty.
The place was packed.
The only downside was that their parking lot had zero self parking spaces, only valet parking so if you prefer not to, would need to find nearby street parking, which we did and walk a few blocks to the restaurant.
Third dishes look not beautiful as on the pictures and the quality of rolls bad. Fourthly, the sushi is flabby and falls apart while you’re bringing it to your mouth. The taste is also not the best. So the rating of 4.6 is too high. The dishes look ridiculous, the portions are small and not appetizing. The vegetables are not fresh. The miso soup is not tasty. The waiter brings the soup and forgets to bring spoons, another waiter promises to bring hot sauce and also forgets about the request. Fifthly, the price for such a lunch is greatly exaggerated. We will not come back here 100%. My rating for this place very low.
Frankly, the place is very popular but crammed up with seating and mediocre service at best. Both servers juggling our table didn’t really seem to be in a good mood…
Some of the fish quality was quite good but the craftsmanship and attention to detail was minimal… mediocre cuts, mediocre presentation, and mediocre taste overall. With such a visual form of cuisine I would prefer a bit more elegance in plating or higher quality textures.
If you’re looking for the best sushi around, maybe go elsewhere, but it’s worth mentioning the nice variety of Japanese cuisine on the menu. Definitely passable, but not memorable. Might make for a good group meal if you have different preferences all around! Unfortunately this place isn’t somewhere I’d come back to with the wealth of options nearby.
The food was decent but oof pricey. My favorite was the bluefin tuna Trio. For the price of the dish, I understand since it tasted pretty fresh and the presentation was visible. I tried sea urchin for the first time here and I guess I can’t say too much about it other than it being very very strong in ocean flavor.
The service was great! I was well taken care of by our amazing waiter.
They were busy and perhaps that was why service was not particularly attentive today (no drink refill offer and one waiter handed us the wrong food, perhaps it was because we were in the overflow seating outside, but we handed our neighbor’s yellowtail handroll order to them)
Food was delicious and not too pricey for what you get, though for the hype, I was expecting the fish to taste more fresh. The ikura didn’t taste like ikura I was used to, sometimes the way you store ikura can drain the flavor. Not super sure..
The atmosphere though was definitely great and you can feel the excitement and great energy inside. If you’re looking for a place to have a nice meal with friends or family in a fun spot, you will have a great time ☺️
Edit: I wanted to also write how detailed and how much time and effort Mario put into each of the rolls he made. He truly is one of the most amazing workers I’ve ever met anywhere.
