This is definitely our local family spot. Solid consistent spot and they have keeping their servers for long time (that also reflect the owner is at least being fair and nice to their employees)
I come here twice a week with my elementary kid. Just too convenient and price is very reasonable with healthy options.
The bento was a great option, sushi rolls are legit in a way off thin rice layer instead feeding you big chunks of rice.
Cooked food menu is also something we go for. Kids menu is a steal, $12 for chicken teriyaki or tonkatsu.

Lucky to have this place on MI. Greta service even when they’re busy. Spicy tuna is great, def spicy, I had the uni special and loved it!! Agedashi tofu and the shrimp tempura is always a hit. Chirashi bowl was fine too

I freaking love this place. I don’t live nearby but I drive all the way here when I want really fresh sushi. I think out of all the places I’ve tried, this is my favorite.

This is a huge pro: They have gluten free soy sauce ready and their eel sauce is naturally gluten free, so I finally got to try eel! (It’s so lovely.)

It’s always nice and quiet in here, even when busy, which is surprisingly hard to find at sushi restaurants. The staff is always courteous as well.

Try the plum wine!

I had an interesting lunch here while seated at the sushi bar.

Although a few tables were occupied, the dining room was very quiet. There were no beers on tap, but the bottled Echigo came highly recommended and proved to be a pleasant surprise; light and refreshing. The hot sake, however, arrived far too hot and seemed as though it had been microwaved.
Two sushi chefs were behind the bar. The older chef, dressed in a black coat, was warm and engaging, and I enjoyed chatting with him. The other, by contrast, was awkward and unsettling. He mostly stood idle, watching me with a peculiar expression; when our eyes met, he’d pull a goofy face and suddenly begin scrubbing cucumbers with a curious vigor.
To top it off, I was overcharged for the otoro sashimi. The menu listed it at $26, yet the check showed $28. When I pointed this out, the waitress matter-of-factly explained that the owner had raised the price but hadn’t updated the menu. When I suggested that they correct it, she said she would “let it go this time,” as though she were doing me a favor. An odd response considering the discrepancy amounts to false advertising.

Rolls were really, really just ok. Not seasoned, balanced, nor a tasty flavor symphony. Despite ordering spicy there was a lack of flavor and no acid, salt to bring these intentional creations to life. Every roll on the menu should bring something special. For $18 that roll should be tasty ykwim? House sake was pretty meh too. Very brightly lit, temperature was very cool inside.

Also based on the young couple next to me – what we’re all needing is some inspiration coming to life!

Wednesday night, no wait, but a fair amount of other diners.

Sushi Joa served some of the best sushi I’ve ever had. The Rainbow Roll was a delicious and the O-Toro (Bluefin Tuna Belly) Sashimi was decadent and buttery. I didn’t get a photo but we also tried the Spicy Tuna Sashimi which was also excellent. Our servers were friendly, attentive and expedient. The cold sake they recommended was a perfect compliment to our dishes. We will definitely be returning!

They have some great vegetarian sushi rolls. The Go Green roll, Buddha roll and Garden roll are all super tasty, well balanced and beautifully presented.

Sushi Joa has quickly become one of my absolute favorite spots on Mercer Island. The chef is a true artist — every piece of sushi is fresh, beautifully crafted, and full of flavor. Whether you’re ordering your go-to roll or letting the chef surprise you, you can’t go wrong.

The staff here is wonderful. Friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help you discover something new. It’s the kind of place where they remember you, treat you like family, and make every visit feel special.

Relaxed atmosphere, consistently delicious food, and service that genuinely stands out — Sushi Joa is a real gem. If you love great sushi, go now and thank yourself later.

Pretty good sashimi and rolls all around, with nothing spectacular and nothing terribly negative. I think if one wants to look for a quick bite while craving sushi instead of looking for anything exquisite or amazingly delicious, which was what my friends and I did, then this establishment would be a good option.

We ordered the sake (salmon) and o-toro (fatty tuna) sashimi, and we were given a reasonable amount with the price that was charged. The sashimi was pretty good in a standard manner. We quickly devoured it. The chicken teriyaki and chicken katsu bento box was also pretty standardly good, with a fair amount of chicken and basic salad with dressing, along with two pieces of oranges and a little bit of rice. Once again, good in a standard way. In fact, I could say the same about everything else, from the red dragon roll to the Seattle tempura roll and to the tempura ice cream. I thought they all resembled what I have had elsewhere in the United States when looking for a Japanese food place located in an outlet-looking type of place, so if you know what I mean, then this is what you would expect here at Sushi Joa as well.

That’s about it! One plus I will give was the playlist, which I even asked about. They put “Snooze” by SZA on Apple Music and all it played was R&B songs by similar musicians and I was totally down for that haha. But of course, that is purely my personal preference so I just want to throw that out there!
