The Sunny Garden was great. The orange chicken was crisp and fresh, and the chow mein was excellent. The string beans were crisp and not overcooked. We got out of there for less than half of the other place and were very pleased (full).
I found a new favorite Chinese restaurant for when I’m in Folsom. Thank you Summer Garden for the excellent food.
Even when you first walk in, there’s this musty, old-restaurant smell, and the seating area looks like it hasn’t been properly cleaned in ages. The booths feel grimy, and it immediately sets the tone for what’s coming.
I always order General Chicken with the sauce on the side, because it’s never crunchy if it comes sauced. This time, the server forgot the request and brought it out as-is. Mistakes happen — but instead of fixing it properly, he got visibly annoyed, took the dish back, and then returned it after my family had already finished eating. The kitchen had refried the chicken with the sauce still on it, and it came back burnt, charred, and mushy. You could taste the burnt sauce, and the meat had a strange, almost defrosted texture.
When I asked about it, he actually said he “wasn’t going to waste the chicken” to make a new one — even though he made the mistake in the first place.
The rest of the food tasted cold and low-quality, like it had just been pulled from a freezer. This place used to be good, but it’s clear there’s corner-cutting happening in both service and the kitchen.
Overall, a completely disappointing and honestly gross experience. I won’t be returning.
They have a couple dim sum dishes, ha gow and Shu Mai and a steamed chasu bun. I would rather get them at a dim sum restaurant but considering they serve it at all is pretty great, just not cheap. It’ll curb your craving for a minute but I would hold out for going into South sac or further for your order. Call ahead of time if you do want to order it!
