I work in Modesto and I was looking for a fantastic Indian food restaurant. Star Indian restaurant popped up on my google list and I checked out the reviews they seemed wonderful, so I decided to check it out. When I walked in the place was spotless. I love Indian food and one thing that caught my eye was they had buttered chicken on the menu. I was sort of disappointed at the fact they did not have a lunch buffet, but the food was worth the wait. I had the Buttered Chicken, Rice & Garlic Naan, and OH MAN was this amazing. I think because I usually always get lunch specials at Indian food restaurants, I don’t really taste the freshness of a meal cooked from scratch. This place knocked it out of the park the chicken was so good, the sauce as well as the garlic naan just topped everything off just right. I am shocked this place is not packed daily for lunch. Its honestly a hidden gem in Modesto. The owner / cook came out to greet me and make sure everything was perfect which it was. You can tell it’s a family owned shop I believe his wife was running the front and his kids were watching TV. I am a family man with kids myself, so it was awesome just to sit down and enjoy such a great meal. I will be sure to spread the word about Star Indian Restaurant to my co-workers and friends. This place is a for sure spot to hit if you are in the area! Thank you for the fantastic food and wonderful customer service! I will be back again!

EDIT: I have to edit the review for this restaurant, due to it changing owners. The image I took two years ago was with the old owners when it was Biryani Express. Honest to goodness, I noticed a significant decline in the quality of the food. It didn’t smell or taste as fresh as I had remembered with the older gentleman and woman who worked there each time my wife and I went. The atmosphere isn’t as inviting anymore either. I enjoyed the layout, the counter, and friendliness of the staff, and above all, the quality of the food. I could honestly say there was a real feeling of customer obsession with the previous owner. I haven’t returned since ownership changed, and I probably won’t. I leave this image up as a reference for what this location/restaurant used to be. A darn shame.

I ordered the buttered chicken, vegetable pakora and cilantro bread through DoorDash. The food was really good. I ate so fast I only got a picture of the bread.

Small family-run business making decent home-made Indian dishes. I particularly liked the eggplant curry with potato. But the goat biryani was bland and wet, worst I’ve ever had.

Great flavors. The Naan and the tandoori had perfect char. The butter chicken was great and the chicken bite sized, which I prefer to the larger chunks many places use. Only reason for four stars instead of five is that their menu changes often and they don’t have their current menu up on a website or Facebook. This makes it hard to call in an order. Menu pic I’m posting is current as of Jan 1, 2019.

The food was okay. I had better but not going to complain about it. But what I will complain about is the service, the lady that was serving us was very rude. We came into the restaurant and she asked if we were dining in or not. I said we were dining in and she gave me a look like she didn’t want us there. We picked out a seat but notice how dirty it was, so we decided to change seats. I know she heard me telling my girlfriend “let’s not sit here, it’s not clean” and she gave my girlfriend a dirty look. We asked for some water and she went to the back. Soon as she left another customer shows up and she greets them and handed them a menu and went to the back and got them water! I wanted to ask her about our water but I was too afraid she was gonna spit in it or something worse. She comes back with our water a few moments later, we did not feel welcome there at all. Oh yeah, the other customer were Indians, same as the server, we felt very unwelcome. The water taste gross, it tasted like melted ice water, the ones in my refrigerator. Food was served, but somehow our food came out the same time the other customers were. We wanted to leave at this point but we felt like it’ll be rude if we did. Food wasn’t bad actually, 7/10. But the server made us feel really uncomfortable.

This is my favorite Indian Restaurant. The food is fresh and tasty and the menu is very broad. Their saag paneer and chicken korma as the BEST!!! And Sonu, the owner, will treat you like family. She’s a warm and caring person.

A very tasty lunch at Biryani Express today. The restaurant was very busy but fast and efficient service had everyone seated with too much food for an army. if I had one complaint it would be Biryani Express serves too much food. Leaving the restaurant feeling stuffed is okay occasionally, so even that complaint is okay.
