South Street Smokehouse – Lafayette, IN | Review & What to Eat

We found good barbecue at the South Street Smokehouse, located by the railroad tracks, on the main drag heading east out of the city.

The Carolina style pulled pork sandwich I had for lunch here was excellent. The pork was tender and not dry, and the coleslaw added a nice bit of crunch and flavor. They had plenty of sauces to try too, and I found the sandwich delicious if a bit messy. The macaroni and cheese side was creamier than it was cheesy, but it was still good. I’d probably go with a different side next time. The meat definitely shines here. I’d recommend this place for anyone looking for a BBQ fix.

People recommended this BBQ joint to us. It’s kinda a hole in the wall and that’s a good thing. The brisket that I had was really, really good, but the sides were a little bland (Mac n Cheese and Greens). My friend loved the ribs. I would eat here again.

Brisket was very tender, you can order it with the bark on sweet tea. Good service, what more can you want? Mac and cheese was not the best but that’s only complaint. Baked beans were delish! Give em a try if you’re craving bbq!

Went on a Saturday at noon and the service was great. Food came out quick and got a table no problem. St. Louis Ribs were delicious and the bbq sauces were great that I had (Sweet & Tangy and Spicy). Overall, a great experience and would be happy to come back again when I’m in the area on a trip.

Brisket was tender and delicious. The sides were all well prepared and tasty. A nice selection of sauces with Sweet and Tangy was my favorite.

Stopped here after a coworker recommended it. I had the rib tips with three of their sauces on the side. The tips were decent (a little dry)but the sauces were very underwhelming. The overall experience? Meh.

The Kansas city brisket was amazing and it was a lot of food for $8. This is the best BBQ I’ve ever had in Indiana.

Great place for excellent BBQ! Loved the brisket, the sides were tasteless. And the staff seemed grumpy.

For Midwest BBQ it wasn’t bad but could have been a lot better for the price $18~$19. I got a two meat platter of brisket and smoked sausage with the beans and potato salad. These are my favorite items at any bbq restaurant and what I judge the quality of the restaurant by. The bbq sauces were pretty good, I used the two spicy sauces and didn’t try the others, I imagine that the other sauces weee a subset of the spicy sauces. The brisket wasn’t very smoky (no smoke ring) but had a decent flavor. The smoked sausage was just like the Eckrich Farm smoked sausage that you can buy at Walmart, definitely don’t recommend the smoked sausage. The beans were okay but I made them a lot better by adding bbq sauce to them. The potato salad wasn’t anything special and seemed fairly store bought (don’t recommend). Finally, the sweet tea and regular tea tasted watered down. Overall it wasn’t bad for Midwest bbq but they could try a little bit harder and have much better quality food for the price.
