A great local eatery right by Rutgers University, New Brunswick hospitals and many of the local towns. This French based restaurant as an amazing array of foods and appetizers. If you are brave you can try the snails or if you try one of their many fish dishes, pasta or steak. The food does not disappoint.

As a longtime somerset county resident and a lover of French cuisine Ive always been curious about Sophie’s Bistro. I came in with a friend and we had the escargot and steak frites with sauce au poivre. The escargot was rather bland, which is hard to do with a sauce made from herbs, butter and garlic. Speaking about garlic, in one of the pictures you’ll notice that the escargot plate has a huge piece of raw garlic and the rest of the garlic looks burned which tasted bitter. The steak-frites with sauce au poivre was disappointing. The sauce was so thin that it was hardly there at all. If youre expecting a sauce au poivre like in a french restaurant then you might be disappointed too. The steak is COVERED with tiny bits of peppercorns, not whole, brined peppercorns and its not a pleasant mouthfeel. The steak was ordered medium rare but when i first cut into the edge of the steak it was practically grey. The steak got more tender in the middle, it wasn’t bad but it certainly wasn’t good, especially not for the price which doesnt reflect the quality. The saving grace of the whole meal were the fries which were thin, tasty and crisp. The food quality leaves lots to be desired. The young woman server was friendly enough but rushed us along the whole meal. The server and the other employees kept coming to try to take the plates away while we were still eating. Not five minutes after we said we were still eating did they come back. The gentleman at the host stand is congenial but the servers made the meal feel too quick and rushed which is certainly not very french. If you’ve never been to france or had french food before or even if you’re in a rush then you might enjoy it. The food wasnt inedible but it wasnt very good and at this price point you expect quality food with good service and this place misses the mark, but maybe thats to be expected from a French restaurant that makes coq au vin with white wine. Quelle dommage.

4.5 stars (rounded up) its a perfect French bistro. Informal setting, casual but competent service. A barkeep who knows his craft and can suggest wine pairings. Started with the Pate de Maison and the mushrooms with puff pastry. Was it the best I ever had? No. But it was clearly prepared by someone who knows how to cook classic French cuisine and still loves to do so. We needed extra bread to sop up every bit of sauce and get every crumb of the pate. The duck and trout were also prepared well. Couldn’t eat another bite so we only ordered the cheesecake and crepes. I cant remember what they were like because by that time I was in a food coma already plus the excellent cocktail and appropriate wine pairings for all three courses. I was in a blissful meditative state. The prices are very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes. The only criticism I have is that the bread is merely ok. That is not up the standards of the rest of the meal. Perhaps a crusty baguette or at least a hearty country bread? Or at least toast the bread to give it a bit of a crust. Nitpicking, yes.

Absolutely wonderful local French restaurant, if the tables were 6 inches closer together, one would feel genuinely surprised of authenticity in French dinning experience and the savoring of individual dishes.

Came here with my family for the seafood broil. Service was fantastic. 5 stars for that alone. We ordered a couple of drinks we did not like and our sever was so attentive and noticed we didn’t enjoy them and replaced them with another order.

Never realized that this place would be such a good one even though we live so close by. This is a hidden gem ! It specializes in French cuisine. The food is delicious. The service is excellent. The decor inside is classic .The owner is so sweet. He stopped by, checked on us and offered dessert drinks on the house. The menu has lots of options for all kinds of dietary needs. They served us warm bread on the house. We ordered duck liver pate for appetizers. It was delicious. I got the lamb shank for dinner and hubby got chicken coq au vin. Both were delicious. The Irish coffee in the end was cherry on the cake ! Will visit again when in mood for French food. Very warm and cozy setting. Loved the dinner experience tonight !!

For it being Mothers day, they went to no effort to make the mothers feel special. Food for a set menu was not that great and over priced.

Today is Bastille Day in France. So where do you go for French cuisine but, to Sophie’s . We started with Vichyssoise Soup which is served chilled. It consisted of potato and leeks topped with garlic croutons. The Bistro Salade with baby arugula, jicama, radicchio, orange and cherry tomatoes all topped with a guava fruit vinaigrette. Our entrees were traditional French dishes. Coq Au Vin au Riesling which is a hearty chicken and vegetables stew in a white wine and lemon. The other was Beef Bourguignon a beef and vegetables stew in burgundy wine sauce. A nice deep red wine to finish it off. Desserts were Sophie’s Chocolate Mousse and a Raspberry Lemon Curd Crepe. The Bistro has a French connection with its decors and art. This restaurant has plenty of on site parking. They have outdoor dining as well. Today we had live entertainment with a singer and pianist. They do have a bar with a liquor license.
