Absolutely great. Curry puff and tempura shrimp were favorite of the tray.
The chicken pad Thai was that wonderful orange color that we missed from the alley.

Unfortunately, Sawatdee Thai & Sushi wasn’t the memorable Thai food experience I’ve been searching for in Pinellas County. While the staff was kind and the restaurant itself is clean and cozy, the food simply missed the mark—especially for someone who knows what truly good Thai cuisine should taste like.
To be fair, my expectations are shaped by years of enjoying authentic Thai dishes, both locally (back when it was more consistently good) and elsewhere. I’ve noticed a general decline in Thai food quality across Florida over the last five or so years—so I didn’t walk into Sawatdee expecting miracles. That said, I was still hoping for something better than what I got.
The biggest red flag was the Pad Thai. It arrived at the table in a bright, artificial-looking orange hue, which immediately set off alarm bells. That coloring typically means the sauce has been heavily altered—likely with ketchup or an overly sweet chili paste. Unfortunately, the taste confirmed my suspicions. It lacked the balance of tamarind tanginess, fish sauce umami, and roasted peanut nuttiness that make Pad Thai such a beloved dish. It wasn’t inedible, but it absolutely wasn’t Pad Thai. It tasted more like a generic sweet noodle stir-fry with little complexity or depth.
Next, I tried the Pra Ram (also called Rama Chicken or Swimming Rama in some places), which should’ve been rich and savory with a peanut-based sauce layered over sautéed spinach or steamed vegetables. Instead, I was served a version that leaned heavily into the sweet end of the spectrum, to the point where it almost felt like a dessert with chicken mixed in. Again—not awful, but definitely not what the dish is traditionally meant to be.
I also sampled their sushi, and while I didn’t expect it to compete with a dedicated sushi bar, I was hoping for something tighter in execution. The rolls were sloppily assembled, and the rice was under-seasoned, missing that vinegared balance that sets good sushi rice apart. The fish itself was fine—nothing off-putting—but the overall presentation and flavor just felt lazy.
Despite these culinary shortcomings, the experience wasn’t the worst Thai meal I’ve had in the area. The dining space is modestly sized but well-maintained, and our server was polite and attentive, even as the only one working the floor. They’re clearly trying, and that’s worth acknowledging. I don’t doubt that they have regulars who enjoy the food here—but if you’re someone who’s looking for Thai dishes that resemble what you’d find in Bangkok, or even in a strong Thai spot in a major city, this likely won’t hit the mark.
The bottom line is this: Sawatdee Thai & Sushi may be acceptable to those unfamiliar with Thai food done right, but it’s a miss for those of us who are chasing that nostalgic, balanced flavor that defines great Thai cuisine. I don’t fault them for trying to appeal to local palates or simplify recipes—but in doing so, the soul of the dishes seems to have been lost.

Second time here, the service and food are still great. I will not say that they are best in town but they are one of the best. Can’t go wrong here if you want Thai Crusine.

Best Thai food I have had so far. This is a small hidden spot not far from 49th st. that’s offers phenomenal Thai and sushi. They have quite a large menu that has a wide selection of options to suit anyone. For my first time here we tried some soup, the spring rolls, pad sea-eaw, house special pad Thai, and banana coins for dessert. All of the food was amazing! The staff was very nice and accommodating and I loved the intimate environment inside of the restaurant. They also had a sign that showed great sushi deals for weekday lunch that I plan on going back for. This was recommended to me by a friend and I will definitely by passing the recommendation onto others. This is a hidden gem that is a must try.

First time at this establishment. I was looking for a new Thai place to try because my regular place (which I won’t name) has been letting me down. Well this place was friendly, clean, reasonable priced but food was just ok. My asparagus rolls which I thought said was to be tempura was so bland. My veggie egg rolls with an unique chewy wrapping was a taste I don’t desire to try again. My veggie Thai rice was good however not Thai hot (per requested). The atmosphere was wonderful as well as service. But being a foodie the actual Thai food wasn’t up to par for me. Gave 4 stars because of 3 is too low.

This restaurant states that they open at 4 pm but doors were locked until 4:10 pm. Then we were seated. Five minutes later, the waitress comes in. A bit late to work? No worries, we didn’t mind. But her service was so slow, distant, and she was rude, too. We put in an order for two sushi rolls, which were amazing btw. Then, she ignored us. We were the only customers there. She was sorting silverware for a long, long time. Were we bothering you? Okay, we asked for an appetizer sampler since we have never dined here and had a chance to look over the menu. But, she was rude and asked us if we “planned on ordering a bit at a time.” Okay, we were planning on ordering desserts later, too… But since she didn’t want us ordering a bit at a time, we didn’t. We just got the check and left. She finally turned on a tv near us when we were leaving. The ambiance was quiet and there was a lot of loud banging of silverware. Nope. Not doing that again.

Sooooo good! I’m 4 months pregnant and was craving seafood so I was excited when I saw that they were open at 11, unlike a lot of other places on a Sunday! I doordashed the Mexican roll, was great! I also ordered the steamed mussels and oh my goodness they are SO good!! The size of them are amazing and the sauce is perfect. 10/10 recommend to eat here! Thanks for making my pregnancy craving fulfilled
