Food is great! Service is amazing! I love the staff and food so I will always try to take my friends who are out of town here! However, there are a few that this business does that I think is fundamentally wrong. There is a 4% extra surcharge on your bill if you go to this restaurant. On Saba’s website they say: “We pride ourselves on paying our teams competitive base wages, but we want to do more.” If they wanted to do more, then why don’t they do more? Why do I as a consumer have to pay a surcharge of 4% on my bill and which on top I am paying tip on top of the 4%? Restaurant owners should pay their employees fairly and not have me as a consumer be their boss. “As a step to minimizing the wage gap, we are adding a 4% “Kitchen Appreciation Fee” to your bill” If they really wanted to minimize their wage gap all together they would pay all of their staff an livable hourly rate. Finally they say “We take a new approach to providing a higher livable wage” It isn’t we, it is the consumers who are providing a higher livable wage for these restaurants. Please remove this 4% fee as people might just tip 4% less which would result in not solving the problem the 4% surcharge was intending to solve.

Saba does a lot of things very well. Excellent, in fact. The food, the atmosphere (both indoors and on the patio), the staff, decor, all amazing. Great location, too. The flavors, my god. Menu is not intimidating and offers many diverse options.

When you google Saba (which I did no less than 35 times, I was so excited to peruse the menu before we went) the line that pops up in the search bar is: “The Best Israeli Restaurant in New Orleans”. This cannot help but feel like a little dig at Shaya, Chef Alon’s former restaurant that royally screwed him over and offers much of the same cuisine. To which I say – Dig away! Saba is proof that this unbelievably talented chef never needed the Besh name (now currently worth nothing, BTW) to pull off what is truly an incredible triumph – Israeli food in Creole Country. Which is all to say – the food at Saba was incredible. We started with the assorted salatim and each one was perfect in both its simplicity and its flavor. We moved on to the very best chumus of my entire life. Perfectly crisped brussel sprouts nestled in a pool of creamy, slightly spicy hummus served with pillowy soft taboon-fired pita. Here’s the kicker – we make a yearly pilgramage from Tel Aviv, where we live, to New Orleans, where I’m from, every summer. What this means is, essentially we have access to the *type* of food served at Saba at a moment’s notice back home. And yet we’ve insisted on coming here since it opened. You know if an Israeli restaurant is able to snag a spot on a restaurant itinerary that is highly researched and extremely competitive, that’s some damn good shakshuka. Sachten, y’all!

A few months ago I visited Shaya and was told I should definitely try Saba, so I did. Walked in and was greeted and sat immediately, sometimes reservations are best. Took a booth seat and was greeted by my waiter Andrew, who was amazing by the way. Ordered a sweet tea (got unsweetened but it was still good), mushroom hummus, falafel plate, grilled cabbage and lamb plate. The mushrooms humus had types of mushrooms, one oyster and the other I forgot. The bread was simply, OMG! The green falafels came in a 5 count with Tahini sauce on the side. Though they were a little more crispy than I like, they had a great flavor. I highly suggest baking or frying not so hard. The lamb was very tender and flavorsome, served over humus and red, sweet onion sauce. The grilled cabbage had just the right amount of char, topped with sprouts and roasted hazelnuts, onions and tomato paste that seems to have some type of refreshing fruit flavor in it. Over all, the experience was awesome and the food was great. Enjoy dinner inside or outside under a covered patio. Definitely won’t be disappointed!

Everything was good, the lamb was even great. But for the price I honestly expected better service, ambiance and food. The service was especially odd with a different person showing up at our table almost every time.

Located in the Uptown area of New Orleans, I found it refreshing to be far away from the French Quarter. Saba has gotten a lot of buzz, and I can see why. The food is fantastic, fresh and reminded me of a favorite restaurant I frequented often in DC (Albi). The lamb kofta was cooked perfectly and came with a fried egg, and a latke. It was more than enough food, but I savored it all. Highly recommend venturing outside of the French Quarter and giving Saba a try.

Upscale, but not uptight Middle Eastern restaurant with exquisite food and presentation. Seating is available indoors or out and at the bar. Staff was friendly and accommodating. During brunch hours on a Saturday and not having reservations, there were no table seats available, so we ended up eating at the bar, but it wasn’t too cramped and we still felt attended to. Our bartender made a really good strawberry basil mocktail and the mushroom garlic hummus was out of this world good! Definitely check this place out!
