5-stars overall but…
The food is exquisite in its sourcing, freshness, ingredients, patient preparation, and taste.
The service is impeccable and highly attentive.
The deco is stark and minimal hence only four stars for atmosphere.
…but don’t bring your appetite. You have to be okay with most dishes being only one or two bites; and after two-plus hours and a hefty check, prepare to walk away hungry.
It is Omakase, so expect the menu to change day-to-day and week-to-week, but if you come more than once, you may find or see a couple of the preparations repeated.
The flavors were on point, more subtle versus bursting on the tongue.
Fish and uni melted away in your mouth; duck was tender; shrimp was especially supple; and rice was perfectly cooked.
I was not a fan of their two different desserts, but I also don’t have a sweet tooth.
Reservations are highly recommended.

Was at this Michelin starred sushi joint to celebrate a birthday. The food was exquisite and befitting of a top sushi restaurant. Atmosphere was tranquil and relaxed – our seating was small during lunch while we were there. Tucked into a complex in Laguna Beach. Worth a visit if in area and looking for good sushi.

Don’t go.
It’s a Michelin star experience restaurant not a good Japanese restaurant. The flavoring is bad. They don’t put enough sauce so all the sushi have no flavor on it, so most fish tastes fishy. The slices on the sushi are too thin so you don’t have enough feeling of the texture.
They don’t even know how to slice the melon so you can see the melon come with a lot of skin makes it not sweet and hard to chew.
They don’t give enough food so I came home and finish an other full doordash meal. 12 courses includes 4 or 5 pieces of sushi and 3 desert is not enough even for the skinny ladies.
If you pay $500 or more for a meal you deserve better quality food not just a fine dinning experience with bad food.
Sorry for my bad grammar but hope you got how angry I am. This restaurant drop so fast after they receive a Michelin star, you can tell from the rating trends.

Finally found time to check out Rebel Omakase on our anniversary. Excellent service, atmosphere, and especially food! Came for lunch and was worth every penny. The standouts for me were the peach tea, miso soup, and striped mackerel. Can say, without a doubt, the best miso soup I’ve ever had.

All of the nigiri was made to perfection and was presented masterfully. The staff was always present and made sure we were taken care of. Highly recommend! Well definitely try dinner next time.

This place is a gem! From the moment I sat down, I knew I was in for something special. The ambiance is intimate and welcoming, with the chef working right in front of you, carefully preparing each dish with so much precision. You can really see the passion behind every course.

The sushi was incredibly fresh, each piece practically melted in my mouth. The chef explained every dish as it came out, which made the experience even more personal. My favorite had to be the uni—it was out of this world, creamy, and packed with flavor. Every bite just kept getting better.

On top of the amazing food, the sake pairing was spot on. You can tell a lot of thought went into every detail, from the timing of each course to how the flavors complemented each other. This place is a must if you’re looking for a true omakase experience.

I can’t recommend it enough. If you want top-tier sushi and a dining experience that feels like a journey, this is the place to go!

This version is more relaxed and conversational, focusing on the highlights in a friendly, engaging way.

The team at RO did an incredible job of coordinating with me from NYC to ensure that my mom had an unforgettable 70th birthday evening. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to be there, but their responsive team and thoughtful coordination gave me absolute peace of mind.

My parents sent me wave after wave of the artful omakase presentation in real time… and reveled in the experience long after! They’re no strangers to a good omakase experience, but I believe the marked difference at RO was the palpable warmth, care and hospitality from the team.

The staff communicated with me beforehand and afterwards. I don’t know if service gets any better than that! And apparently the food is phenomenal. I look forward to visiting soon!

Thank you so much to the RO team, for taking such wonderful and thoughtful care of us.

Rebel Omakase aims for Michelin-star status but falls short of expectations. The staff was friendly and professional, and the wine and sake selection was great, though no sake or wine pairing was offered. Some of the plating was very extravagant, and the gifts were a nice touch. However, the sushi quality was inconsistent—while some fish was fresh, others, like the raisin-dry salmon roe, disappointed. The chef’s reserved demeanor and lack of dish explanations left us confused; the chef drops the sushi without saying what it is, so we had no idea what we were eating. We had to ask several times what we were eating, and it would have been helpful if the chef could at least say what he is serving. The absence of matcha was also a letdown. Michelin-star omakase requires not only top-tier ingredients and masterful technique but also a chef who explains what he is serving and greater consistency in the quality of the sushi. Unfortunately, Rebel’s uneven fish quality, weak sushi basics, and detached chef fall short of these standards.

In Laguna Beach’s competitive sushi scene, Rebel Omakase doesn’t quite live up to the Michelin hype. We suggest trying other spots for a more satisfying experience and better value.

Service and ambiance were great, but we were already $350 each which is a splurge for us to then see there were no sake bottle options of a reasonable price. They need some options way under $200. Everything was $200-2,000+
Food presentation was very pretty and artful and the ingredients were fresh and unique- but there was no flavor at all in most of the first half of the food. Everything was quite bland and had zero taste but on the other hand enjoyed trying the different Japanese ingredients.
