I am..or rather was a frequent customer at Ranchero Steakhouse and Cantina in South Glens Falls. My friend and I would go there a couple of times a week at least to get a beer after work, some dinner, and would just wind-down and relax. It was a nice place and was our number one choice for a relaxed atmosphere to talk and to “wine and dine;” however, in recent months, we’ve noticed a change. It had been brought to my attention after the fact that Ranchero is now under new ownership, which wasn’t a surprise given the drastic change in its overall demeanor.
Our usual bartender – a kind, sweet girl who was easy to carry on a decent conversation with – had turned into this older, less-personable, obnoxious woman. Other, more pleasant staff members are now missing as well.
I used to be able to order an extra rare burger there and get just that every time, but the cook (who is also the new owner) doesn’t know how to do that properly, and it would come out medium-well at best. It may not seem like a big deal, but you start going to a place and eating there for their ability and consistency, both of which now seem to be lacking.
The crowd has changed too. It used to be a few people and/or families at the bar and in the restaurant, new and familiar faces ranging in ages; now, it appears the new crowd is more of the middle-aged winos ranging from the pseudo elite to the local yokel, but in the extremes without much if any of a middle ground, who yell over each other creating a cacophony of what I would assume is human conversation, though it lacks the spirit and intellect.
And, last but not least, the music. Ranchero would usually have a guest musician play every once in a while and it would be a little loud, but nothing unbearable; however, since the new owners took over, they blare music after a certain time and leave it playing at an annoyingly unnecessary volume. You can’t even have a regular conversation without having to yell at the person sitting 2-3 feet away from you.
It seems as though they are trying to turn a once very nice, respectable little place into another South Street-style hangout. Is that really what the area needs, is another trash bar? I mean, there’s a reason night clubs and bars are in Lake George and on South Street. Why not leave them there and preserve the family atmosphere of a nice town? The greatest appeal it use to have was the relaxed family atmosphere with the restaurant on one side and a friendly “Cheers” style bar on the other.
Well, needless to say, I am no longer going to Ranchero as long as these new owners are running the place. As the old saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
