Ordered uthappam, adai, and the “rasam of the day” from this South Indian restaurant recently. Overall, the food was genuinely good and satisfying. The uthappam was soft, nicely cooked, and had a good balance of toppings without being too oily. The adai had a lovely texture—crisp on the outside and hearty inside, with that comforting, homely flavor you expect from a well-made lentil dosa.

The only small downside was the rasam. It tasted nice and comforting, but there was no mention of which variety it was, so I couldn’t tell which flavor they had sent. A little clarity on that would have made the experience better. That said, the quality and taste were definitely above average, and I’d consider ordering again.

I went to Ramanee after very high recommendations from a friend and the food absolutely lived up to the hype!

The podi idli and medu vada were easily some of the best I’ve had in a long time, and the dosas were crisp, flavourful, and done just right. I even tried the coconut barfi, which was genuinely excellent.. Food-wise, no complaints at all. Truly outstanding!

That said, the service was a MAJOR letdown. There was a captain, who seemed completely uninterested, and a lady server who was equally disengaged. At one point, no one was even looking in our direction. I actually called out for someone to take our order, and while other diners turned to look at me, the staff did not.

We also waited quite a while for a chutney refill after requesting for it… and it arrived only after we were basically done eating.

So yes, excellent food, very disappointing service.
I would definitely come back for the food alone, but maybe not when hosting a guest or when service matters. Hopefully this was an off day, because the kitchen is clearly doing something very right.

RCTC Ramanee : located at Gate No. 3 of RCTC ( Royal Calcutta Turf Club).
Hidden Gem for South Indian Food lovers. Luxurious ambience. Ordered Neer More ( butter milk with green chili and curry leaves) , Cocktail vada plate, kuzhi Paniy aaram, and Rava onion Dosa,Mysore masala Dosa, Filter coffee, aerated water(Masala cold drinks).
Come to the point of taste:
Starter item imn vada was good and soft in taste, rava dosa was ok but Mysore dosa was not upto the mark. Disappointed about the taste of filter coffee….Exceptional this ,Cleanliness was good and surroundings were crowdless. Staff’s behaviour was also good. They offered a different type of mouth freshner ( dried betal leaf mix with small pieces of Areca nut), was quite unique in taste. Price was not hyped and Overrated ; according to it’s ambience , listed price rate are affordable. Overall nice experience.

Ramanee is a must-visit if you are in search of food that takes your taste buds for a ride! This was the most authentic South Indian food that we’ve had outside of our homes. Each and every item, from the gunpowder to the chutneys to the item that we ordered, had an impeccable balance of spices. We took a chance on this restaurant after visiting Rao’s Udipi Home and Prema Vilas for years. We ordered a thali for lunch on a Saturday, and needless to say, each and every item was as it should be traditionally made. We were totally bowled over by the taste alone (ambience and service were excellent too), so we came back again for lunch and dinner the next day. I currently live in Chennai, and I can tell you that we don’t get food as good as this anywhere. This is now going to be our go-to restaurant when we are in Calcutta!

Ramanee – The Soul of Dakshin is truly a hidden gem in Kolkata. If you’re planning to visit their main branch, one thing to note is that the exact location doesn’t show up on Google Maps. Instead, search for Royal Calcutta Turf Club. Once you enter the premises, you’ll find the restaurant inside. If you feel confused, just ask the guard — they’ll guide you properly.

The restaurant offers an amazing fine dining experience at a very reasonable price, which honestly feels rare these days. The ambience is calm, elegant, and has a very soothing South Indian touch. The staff members are extremely well-behaved, polite, and attentive, which makes the overall experience even more pleasant.

Coming to the food — it’s absolutely authentic and full of flavour. I tried the masala dosa and ragi upma, and both were delicious, light, and perfectly prepared. You can really feel the authenticity in every bite.

And one thing you must not miss is their filter kapi. It’s honestly the best I’ve had — very flavourful, aromatic, and the perfect way to end the meal.

Overall, Ramanee is a must-visit place for anyone who loves authentic South Indian food, great ambience, and quality dining without spending excessively. Highly recommended.

We went there for dinner. The ambience is very good and also the service. All the staff had a smiling face… However the food left us wanting better. As it was evening maybe they were running out of sambar as it felt it was made from ready made spices without use of vegetables. The coconut chutney can be improved. The other chutney- made of chilli was something different. Another downside of this place is parking. As it is roadside parking, most of the times they are overflowing and one has to hunt for spots in the neighbourhood!

We ordered cola float, kapi, tamarind ice cream, mini idlies and sambhar, cocktail vadas and Chef’s special Dosa. Mini idlies were really soft. Vadas were good and I loved the Dosa. Kapi was overpriced. I had better filter coffee at a price less than that. Service was very slow. The chutneys were good. the ambience was good.
