We came in early on a Saturday evening with a party of five. Our server’s name was Andrew, and it was his second night on his own – well-deserved promotion Andrew! We loved your food recommendations, you kept our waters full even though the bottles were on the tables for us, and we could tell you absolutely loved working for Principle, which made our experience that much more enjoyable. We ordered every appetizer except for the confit duck wings (not for any reason other than we had to pace ourselves) and we devoured each dish like children at an ice cream shop. And we almost ordered a round two of the same appetizers, but didn’t want to seem too gluttonous. Looking back we probably should have. Oh well – next time! We had the meatloaf, the roast chicken, the flank steak, the crab cakes and the pork chop. We also ordered the pear risotto (absolutely unique and I LOVED this dish) and the broccoli. Everything was so amazing! Chef Drew did not miss at all. The salted caramel cheesecake was fluffy (yes, I said fluffy) and oh so good! We also had the vanilla and passion fruit sorbetto (I mixed the flavors) and the chocolate pudding. If you like dark chocolate and tart raspberries, that one is for you. The ambiance was cozy and clean. We can’t wait to come back and try the rest of the menu items!

This place was an absolute gem I will definitely be back. Found it with coworkers while on work travel. I had the shrimp and the spice was fantastic, the salad was well-balanced and the cheesecake was so good I couldn’t even get a photo! Chill vibes, high ceilings, craft cocktails, etc. Perfect way to unwind after work

One of the best dining experiences I’ve had downtown kzoo. The drinks were amazing and well thought out. The food, let me tell you about the food, ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Only got photos of the apps as once the entrees hit our table we had no time for games.

I wish I could give them five stars, but I just can’t. The atmosphere is perfection, they always have good service, their drinks are out of this world, but the food was just not good.

I was back in town after about seven years since coming to Principal (to actually eat, I’ve been for drinks), and my sister and I wanted a special night out to catch up. I ordered the steak option on the menu, which was served with hash brown pieces and a horseradish sauce and some mushrooms. The only good parts were the horseradish sauce (I’m a sucker for creamy horseradish), and the mushrooms. The hash browns were so unbelievably salty that I could hardly eat them. This dinner meant a lot to us, so I chose to eat a bit of them and just said I wasn’t that hungry (which wasn’t true). I ordered my steak medium rare, but it was barely seared and VERY VERY rare. I could hardly cut it. I am a venison girl, so I love undercooked steak, but this was just RAW.

This is not an inexpensive restaurant. By the time we had a couple of drinks each, an appetizer, two meals, and a desert to split (I didn’t try the desert because my appetite was ruined with the massive amount of salt in my meal and the undercooked steak), I ended up spending about $170 after tip. I want to say that I will be back again, but probably just for drinks. The food was absolutely not worth the fuss or the price.

We enjoyed the nicely presented and creative appetizers. It was a bit busy and we waited about 10 minutes for seats at the bar. Interesting, though, there were tables available the entire time we were there. If we’re walking around downtown Kalamazoo, we would consider stopping for a drink or appetizer.

Fantastic experience. They even had a menu that highlighted menu items that contained dairy since I’m lactose intolerant. We had the toast and duck wings for appetizers and they were great. For entree we had the white fish and pork chop. We finished with the chocolate pudding. Perfect portions and great service.

The food was exotic and
delicious. The drinks are spectacular. Everything has a twist. I told them to make me a drink, with tequila, agave, and not sweet. I don’t know what I had, but it was smoky and good. The beet hummus was unbelievable. I will be trying to make that. The crab cakes were a winner. Good food, good drinks, what more could you ask for. They even have a drink where you can roll the dice to see what you get.

Very good quality, service, and food at a price. I do recommend the shrimp with the cheddar biscuits. You know the food is good when everyone in your group wants to share a bite of their dinner. 4 stars is very good food in my evaluation but value is not Excellent or outstanding but really good.

Service was the highlight. Also the signature drinks were very good.

Food was oh so delicious. Our server was helpful, knowledgeable and timely. I had the rainbow trout. The onion powder encrusted goat cheese really added to the trout, and I don’t like goat cheese. The atmosphere was ok, but the chairs were uncomfortable.

We went to Principle for the first time last night, with reservations at 6:30. We were seated right away and while waiting, appreciated the vibe of the place which was lively, yet relaxed. Very unique and interesting selections of cocktails, though we didn’t try any; definitely will next time.
We had the pork belly as an appetizer and the flavor profile was outstanding. Again with the meatloaf, which is what my husband ordered for dinner; unique and daring flavors that just worked well together. I had a small issue with my meal, but the care and attention shown by the staff to resolve the issue quickly, reminded me why I love supporting local businesses; that level of service is rare. Will, our server, was kind, knowledgeable, and attentive; he rounded out a very pleasant experience overall, and we look forward to returning whenever we’re back in the area.
