It’s called Pop’s Main Thang Cafe located at 395 Main St in Lansing.
We had dinner there this evening and the food was delicious! I had the fried chicken dinner with homemade fries and Jeff the fried catfish dinner with sauteed spinach. It was so juicy, well seasoned and not greasy whatsoever.
We also shared a bowl of gumbo, the mac & cheese and okra.
The portions were very generous and we brought home lots of leftovers. Everything is made from scratch right when you order and Pop is a one man show. He takes your order, prepares your food, serves you and finds time to chat with you in between. Very impressive!
I’m attaching photos for all the foodies out there!
I hope you find time to visit Pop’s establishment because it would be nice to keep restaurants open in our area.
Best regards,
Jeff and Maria
The owner was laid back and very pleasant to talk with. There are wonderful large paintings of the town and the river on the wall, so that was fun to look at.
A true 5-star experience. This small Iowa town is very fortunate to have this little gem in their community. I can’t wait to come back sometime and try some of the other menu items!
I hope in the near future there will be some signage outside over the entry, so folks walking through town have a better chance of noticing it.
I had the crispy chicken breast sandwich with fries and my husband had chicken tenders and waffles. Both were delicious and the portions large. The chicken was so good (moist and breading to die for) we ordered an 8 piece order of fried chicken and dirty rice to go that we could have for dinner. Each of our lunch meals were $9 before tax and gratituity.
Since everything was made to order, there is a little wait for your food but it’s worth it. Carry out is available. Plenty of seating available. It’s not fancy but is comfortable.
Had the catfish dinner w grilled veg and the shrimp po’boy with fries. The catfish breading, so so crunchy! Loved the sweet cold slaw as the bed for the shrimp on the po’boy, and the pickles were a nice add. A dash of hot sauce added, and yum!
Safely packed up in Styrofoam, food separated, tin-foiled as needed. It survived the 20 min drive home w/o getting soggy.
And it was GOOD!
Thank you for cooking this.
(Note for people in a rush: the owner runs the dining room as well as the kitchen. Be patient, and your taste buds will be rewarded!)
Perfectly seasoned, crispy and not oily.
The dinner plate is half of a fried chicken, you won’t be hungry. I had fried okra as my side and it was perfectly cooked as well.
