We were so impressed with this new restaurant in Lansing that we had to share.
It’s called Pop’s Main Thang Cafe located at 395 Main St in Lansing.
We had dinner there this evening and the food was delicious! I had the fried chicken dinner with homemade fries and Jeff the fried catfish dinner with sauteed spinach. It was so juicy, well seasoned and not greasy whatsoever.
We also shared a bowl of gumbo, the mac & cheese and okra.
The portions were very generous and we brought home lots of leftovers. Everything is made from scratch right when you order and Pop is a one man show. He takes your order, prepares your food, serves you and finds time to chat with you in between. Very impressive!
I’m attaching photos for all the foodies out there!

I hope you find time to visit Pop’s establishment because it would be nice to keep restaurants open in our area.

Best regards,
Jeff and Maria

Found this place while sightseeing, and I have to say I was not disappointed! This place is a GEM in Iowa! I highly recommend it, and Pops’s hospitality was warm and comforting. I’ll be back when I visit this area again!

Pop’s is a unique eatery, both for the food, and for Pop himself. The menu isn’t huge, but it touches all of the food categories and consists of items not normally seen in rural Iowa. Here’s the current menu, but what I find interesting thus far are the several sides shown in the lower left. Grilled veggies and fried cabbage may sound boring, but they’re both surprisingly tasty. I’ve also tried the burger, chicken sandwich, and gumbo, all of which were excellent. Pop is a sharp, interesting fellow who has been in the restaurant business since his early teens and has lived and worked in several mid-western cities.

I was in town for the weekend and stopped here to have some lunch. I am from the South originally, so soul food is near and dear to my heart. I tried the fried whole catfish with corn on the cob and sautéed spinach. It was absolutely amazing!

The owner was laid back and very pleasant to talk with. There are wonderful large paintings of the town and the river on the wall, so that was fun to look at.

A true 5-star experience. This small Iowa town is very fortunate to have this little gem in their community. I can’t wait to come back sometime and try some of the other menu items!

I hope in the near future there will be some signage outside over the entry, so folks walking through town have a better chance of noticing it.

Food here is exceptional. Good cooking takes a little time, but totally worth it. I have never tasted better chicken anywhere. The coleslaw is homemade and delicious! Taking home the cheesecake with strawberries was a great touch to the meal. Staff is friendly and a great addition to this downtown. I will keep returning.

Highly recommend! Found this new restaurant via a Google search and thought we’d try it. The owner greeted us and took our order, in addition to making the food. While we didn’t have any, free coffee is available as well as to-go cups.

I had the crispy chicken breast sandwich with fries and my husband had chicken tenders and waffles. Both were delicious and the portions large. The chicken was so good (moist and breading to die for) we ordered an 8 piece order of fried chicken and dirty rice to go that we could have for dinner. Each of our lunch meals were $9 before tax and gratituity.

Since everything was made to order, there is a little wait for your food but it’s worth it. Carry out is available. Plenty of seating available. It’s not fancy but is comfortable.

That was some good food! On a whim decided to stop in, ask for carryout, and yes!

Had the catfish dinner w grilled veg and the shrimp po’boy with fries. The catfish breading, so so crunchy! Loved the sweet cold slaw as the bed for the shrimp on the po’boy, and the pickles were a nice add. A dash of hot sauce added, and yum!

Safely packed up in Styrofoam, food separated, tin-foiled as needed. It survived the 20 min drive home w/o getting soggy.

And it was GOOD!

Thank you for cooking this.

(Note for people in a rush: the owner runs the dining room as well as the kitchen. Be patient, and your taste buds will be rewarded!)

This is the best fried chicken I’ve had since my aunt passed away.
Perfectly seasoned, crispy and not oily.
The dinner plate is half of a fried chicken, you won’t be hungry. I had fried okra as my side and it was perfectly cooked as well.

The owner is very friendly. The fried chicken was crispy and very well seasoned. My wife had the chicken and waffles and was very happy with her meal as well. There was plenty of food for the price. We will be returning.

UNBELIEVABLY flavorful! Everything we ordered was amazing and so incredibly flavorful. Amazingly, the entire show was run by one person. We could not even believe the amount of work this man accomplished and the food is unmatched. Everything was fantastic. Get the fried chicken!
