I was there the a few weeks ago and had a completely different experience than one of the recent reviews. The downstairs was packed and upstairs was clearly closed off. Security was telling multiple people that it wasn’t open, not just one person.

There was a guy who tried to go up anyway to talk to an uninterested bartender and got loud about it. From where I was standing, security stayed pretty calm and just kept telling him he couldn’t go upstairs. He didn’t want to listen and started arguing. At one point he lost his balance on the steps while they were guiding him back down. I didn’t see anyone get “pushed.” It honestly looked like they were trying to prevent a bigger situation.

I actually appreciated how they handled it. They didn’t escalate things, didn’t get aggressive, and kept the night moving so everyone else could enjoy themselves. It’s a bar — security’s job is to keep things under control, especially when it’s busy.

I’ve been coming here since the ownership change and it’s still a solid spot. Staff has always been respectful to me. Some people just don’t like being told no.

The “security” is pretty awful out there. Not a place I would want to go back to or frequent. I went in and saw the bottom bar was full so I went upstairs to see a friend and two young probably early twenty year old males (I guess they hire anyone who can be a thuggish punk without respect) told me to leave because the upstairs was closed and pushed me down the stairs I asked them not to push me and I definitely wanted to leave before the physical altercations. Anyways not the cool and relaxed tavern it used to be under the previous owners. They should clean up their act and be respectful. But it is 2026 so maybe that’s asking too much smh.

CALL JOHN TAFFER

We didn’t get to see the upstairs—it was closed off—but based on the downstairs alone, it felt a bit like someone purchased a bar and then thought, “You know what this needs? Food service!” …without actually learning what food service entails. The entire experience had strong *Bar Rescue* energy, minus Jon Taffer bursting through the door.

Our waitress was an absolute rockstar. Truly wonderful. Unfortunately, she also appeared to be the only person doing any actual work besides the cook. She was juggling every table, sprinting around the floor, and occasionally having to debate operations with the man I assumed was the owner. Meanwhile, dishes arrived one at a time with food getting cold.

Eventually, the presumed owner/manager did jump in to help—**after** finishing his Skittles and TV show while his staff visibly struggled. A leadership moment for the books.

As for the food: it tasted fine! However, the cook sported a very impressive (and extremely uncovered) beard, paired with gloves that apparently met their daily wear-time quota long before we arrived. Since the kitchen is fully visible, we’re confident they know we saw the whole performance.

P.S the walls inside were peeling and the music was incredibly loud my

Stopped in for an espresso mid afternoon, not their typical time for gearing up the espresso machine but the engaging bartender cheerfully set me up with my dearest wish. Pinky’s is so unpretentious & relaxing, I immediately felt at home. The customer at the bar was enjoying her sliders so that’s me, next time. The whole scene made me happy.

The service upstairs was Horrible the Bartender upstairs was slow waited for almost an Hour for him to aknlowdge me and when he did he took an extra 20mn to get me a Modelo with a lime.
I Payed cash and he had the audasity to say “Hey,bro ur supposed to leave a tip” what he said straight up ruined the night Didn’t even finished my first drink and just left
For anyone going if you see a blonde long hair bartender there i would go downstairs they are probably better because i dont think there’s worst service that what he provides upstairs

Food was meh, atmosphere would have been good if not for the extremely rude bar staff. Just another place to fill an old hole in the wall of old town New Bern. There are better places by far in the area, especially if you drive a little farther outside of old town New Bern.

Traditional Irish pub in a beautiful old building with 2 stories. Live music and DJ almost every night and late night. Look for the sliders which are premium level at reasonable prices.
