Picalonga Mix – Orlando, FL: Latin Flavor Explosion… and a Scented Ambush
This spot? It was different. Like, teleport-you-to-a-side-street-in-Santo-Domingo different . If you’re looking for authentic Latin street food vibes, Picalonga Mix delivers that hard. We ordered…well, honestly I don’t even know what all we got —but check the pics for the full food lineup.
We had:
• Crispy empanadas that crunched like a snack commercial
• Deep-fried meat cones (yeah, I said cones) with shredded chicken and ground beef inside
• Plátanos maduros that were sweet and caramelized on the outside, like plantain candy
• Fried chicken that was tasty… but kind of like playing bone-in bingo
• Fries, rice, beans, and slaw to round it all out like a Caribbean sampler platter ️
The flavor? Fantastic. The food? Bold. The experience? Fun. We all enjoyed it and left full and happy.
BUT THEN CAME THE SMELL.
Y’all. This restaurant is under full assault from air fresheners. Not just one. Not two. Like, an army of scent bombs hidden in every corner like some kind of olfactory ambush. They had pink deodorizer cakes (the kind you’d see in a janitor’s dream or a nightmare?) sitting around everywhere. One was literally right next to my wife’s head. She moved it. I nearly lost my sense of smell. We started wondering… what exactly are they trying to cover up?
Still, if you can survive the sensory battle between garlic and Glade, the food is worth trying. Super authentic. Super flavorful. Just bring nose plugs or dine al fresco.
Also… they added an 18% tip to the bill for groups of 4 or more and didn’t tell me anything about it. I added my 20% tip onto the top of that… I asked around Orlando at other restaurants and they said this is the tip. No additional tip needed. I actually asked our server about it after I had paid and she said that was not the case. I think she mislead me about what the 18% was. She said you typically still tip on top of that.

Would I go back? Maybe. For the food, yes. For the mystery scent warfare? I might need backup. ️♂️ and pay attention to the bill.
Update 11/24. Had the pleasure to dine in. The food was spectacular. I had the shrimp mofongo with pork belly inside so delicious. My daughter had chicken Alfredo such a big portion had to take some for take way. The tostones with their sauce is out of this world.. I loved their soursop and tamarind juice that are made by the restaurant refreshing and delicious. I will continue to come back until my last day in Orlando.
We have being coming here for years and absolutely love it!
The quality of the food, the service! Super!
Fresh and authentic Dominican!!!
We ordered several items from the menu. Our favorite was the Picadera, which was very tasty. The frosted glass and super cold beers were a hit with both me and my husband. However, the entrees were mediocre. I ordered the Chofan rice and left the whole thing untouched. My husband ordered the churrasco well done, but it was bloody. After asking the waiter to cook it longer, it came back the same, so my husband didn’t bother eating the rest. The food did not taste authentically Dominican to us.
On a positive note, the customer service was superb.
Overall, the restaurant’s fritura is extremely good, but the entrees fell short. Additionally, considering it’s a hole-in-the-wall restaurant located in a mall, we found it a bit overpriced.
