Heartbreak at how disappointed I was in the food overall. The place was inviting and had a relaxed vibe. Enjoyed the display of hats everywhere.

Looking at the menu it sounded tasty but aside from the banana pudding this was one of the biggest $40 letdowns of all time. Got chopped pork and brisket and my daughter had chopped pork. The meat was very dry. Not sure if it has been sitting or if it is normal. The sauces are basically BBQ water. Every single one is just liquid and had no substance. I’m a traditional thick and hearty pit BBQ guy. This just wasn’t it. I’m hoping it was just an off day but the potato salad and Mac n cheese tasted like the store bought kind. Banana pudding did as well but it tasted good.

Service was fine. No greeting upon entering as the counter is further inside. While the order here sign was above the register it wasn’t totally clear if it was seat yourself or someone would seat you. We ended up figuring that out by getting the last table in the place. Was another reason I figured was going to be really good but maybe it’s just because it’s one of the only places in the area.

Had the 2 meat plate w/ chopped brisket and pork. Meat was tender, and they have 5 choices of sauce you can apply to your liking. Green beans were delicious, seasoned with onions and bacon. Potato salad was good as well. Hush puppies were sweet and buttery. And topped my meal of with some awesome banana pudding. Would definitely recommend if you’re in the area.

I never thought you could make chicken as dry as jerky. But they accomplished it!
Okra was great and Mac was fine. But I’m floored there isn’t daily choking ok the meat here. Im positive there are stray cats that wouldn’t eat the meat here.

I drove by this restaurant, and as I had a craving for collard or turnip greens (daily folates), I called, and was thrilled to find they not only had collard greens, two or three varieties of vinegar as well. I ordered collard greens (with a side of chicken sandwich of course ;)), and as I was greeted so courteously on the telephone,I wanted to know with whom I spoke . It was a girl named “Kaylee”. This may not seem much, but 36 years of high-end super and hyper car sales, I understand the importance customer facing and telephone answering of both. Each instance Kaylee exceeded my expectations. I wanted the restaurant management/owner to know.

Phil’s was really good! The ambiance was rustic( when I walked in I noticed that there were a bunch of hats on the walls) and the food was delicious! As a tourist first time visiting North Carolina, I had high expectations and this place exceeded them. I tried all the sauces, but the East Carolina sauce was my favorite. Overall I enjoyed this place and I will come back.-Henry

Got the three meat plate. Chopped brisket. Chopped chicken. Chopped pork. Brisket was my favorite but they were all great. Generous portions. Fries were golden crispy. Mac n cheese was thick and creamy. And the fudge dipped chocolate chip cookie. Perfect.

It’s counter service and it was quick. Just a couple minutes after ordering we had our food.

Can’t wait to go back. I’m going to get banana pudding next time.

Had friends passing through and needed a restaurant close to I-40 so they could easily get back on the road. We decided to try Phil’s as it was convenient and I had received a recommendation months ago. Phil’s lived up to the hype and more. The staff was friendly and accommodating and everyone was pleased with their meal. I had the chopped brisket sandwich. It was worth the price of admission, but the sides made the experience. I’m a French fry snob and Phil’s fries are the best I’ve ever had. The hats on the ceiling are a a quality atmospheric touch. Phil’s now has a permanent spot in the rotation. Highly recommend stopping in if you’re in or around Black Mountain.

We were in Montreat for a memorial service and decided to go to Phil’s for lunch. The wait was not bad and we weee able to find a table. Our meal was good but the sweet potato fries were overcooked. I love the country atmosphere and the collection of ball caps are great.
