My mom and I visited this location for the first time today. It wasn’t busy at all. I went to the kiosk to order the food /drinks and our order was ready within a few minutes. We ordered the two entrees with a side. My mom stated that the half turkey sandwich that she had was a little dry and she have ordered a soup with it. I ordered the half Mediterranean veggie sandwich and it hit the spot.

This Panera in the Ghent area of Norfolk has several self ordering kiosks for faster service and a self service coffee station. There is one cashier for those who wish to order with a person. The restaurant seemed clean, and my order was delivered quickly. The cost is high as one breakfast sandwich and a large coffee was over $10.

Maleik Mendoza is the best manager I have observed in my many years of eating at Panera. When I walked in today, he was alone on the front line, in the middle of handling a crisis for a customer and doing it with a smile. Yet, he noticed when I walked in, acknowledged my presence with a greeting and that he would be right with me. No problem! He continued to work with the customer, handle the phone, and the following customers who walked in behind me. When he got to me, he helped me order “something good with 2 shots but sweet”. I’m sure that vague request was the last thing he needed, but he helped me think! What he didn’t know is I had driven up from Charlotte yesterday evening, had been up all night handling a situation, had business in Norfolk and Newport News, and had to drive back to Charlotte this afternoon. I am so appreciative of this experience today! I come here at least once a month, and he is always the same. He works! I would think morale is very high at this store based on my 30 years if customer service experience, and the Panera corporation should model all its managers after Maleik.

The ridiculous cost for any “large” portion of food isn’t worth the money at all. You get essentially nothing, you pay a price equivalent to a dinner but receive something that can only be described as a small yummy snack. I’m not sure what their targeted audience or demographics is, but from my point of view I can’t figure out why the Panera Bread chain hasn’t gone bankrupt.
