Definitely surprised me at how awesome this place was. Enchilada chicken verde was excellent, tons of flavor, good amount of heat. Still amazed this place was for where in this country I was.

So if you are from Lenoir NC or the surrounding area I can totally understand why you would give this place 5 stars! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the service, the staff, or the atmosphere. However, if you’re from South TX, with a wife from Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico, and you’ve spent the last 12 years traveling and seeking out the best Mexican food from the southern tip of Florida up into the Northern Bay of Alaska above the Arctic Circle, then you will quickly realize that this place suffers very badly from a common disease in certain areas. They have “catering to old white people who don’t know what good Mexican food is” disease, lol. I am very much white myself, and I am working on becoming old but just like Polio with the vaccine and infection with antibiotics this disease was a huge problem that likely won’t be in 20 years as we figure out solutions to problems. Okay serious now….the food is not bad, the prices are good, but it is a poor imitation of good Mexican food and you can predict this and prepare for this with your first taste of their salsa. The salsa tastes good but if you’re familiar with the first symptoms of CtOWP, you know that salsa of this color, consistency, spice level, and taste is a telltale sign of the disease. If your family is from this area and you want to take them to an inexpensive Mexican food dinner that everyone will enjoy, I think this is a great spot! If you have spent many years living elsewhere or you are hosting your friends from out of town, I would take them to barque instead. If you are someone who has been exposed to great street tacos, tex-mex style enchiladas which aren’t authentic but are simply great, or the timeless treasure but new fad of Birria, or even the simple dishes of grilled Pollo o Asada served covered in a cheese or sauce of some kind, served with rice, beans, and fresh tortillas, and so many others please do not come here and expect to be impressed…..but remember even though I haven’t been impressed by any of my Pollo de X dishes and my boss ordered a Chile Relleno 6 times before realizing that the way you actually get a stuffed pepper is too order a totally different dish, I left full every time, my food came out quick, and it never broke the bank! Not super full though bc as soon as I felt like the amount in my stomach would hold me over until my next opportunity to eat I left the last tortilla and 30% of my food on my plate just bc once I wasn’t physically hungry anymore I did not feel like stuffing anymore of the somewhat dry, bland chicken in my mouth any longer. Again, I found the chicken to taste that way but my 65 year old boss that grew up an hour from here who didn’t know how to order what he wanted so continuously came back and ordered the wrong dish and expected it to somehow magically change…..he loved it and id you’re just reading this review, I think you will too!
Edit: btw if you want the stuffed pepper get the Chile Poblano not the Relleno. I don’t know why they shred up the pepper with everything else into a kind of paste with the Relleno, maybe so it’s convenient to put in a tortilla? But that is how it is served and I’ve been told that if you actually want a stuffed Chile to order the Chile Poblano. Please don’t hate me if it comes out and it’s not what you expected I’m just passing along this info and hopefully it is if some help to you!

I’m a tractor trailer driver who got stuck in Lenoir Nc waiting to unload for 4 days. The owner of Poncho Villa allowed me to park my tractor part of my truck behind his business there. Needless to say I had dinner there the first night. Then every meal I could after that, staff were awesome not only service but personality as well. I live in Nashville and wish this place was much closer to my home. Anytime you’re in Lenoir Nc you should make this place a must stop in . I promise you will NOT REGRET IT. Poncho Villa is well worth every minute.
