Back in ’96, when this place burned down, I was one of the folks who stepped up to help rebuild it. At the age of 14, I shoveled out five dump trucks of ash and soot with my brother. My mom was leasing from Katie the restaurant side at the time, and her grand opening happened to be the very night the fire took it all out. I even remember cutting up four 5-gallon buckets of French fries for that launch— that never even got served. That stung for awhile, because I found them while shoveling out ash and I had to throw them away If you visited here between the years of 1996-2001, I chopped the French fries that you ate here. I started Basic Training for the Army in January of 2002 and stopped working here for the most part as I trained with the military after that.
I share that to say this: I’ve had a long history with this building and what it once represented. That’s what makes what happened to me here so disheartening.
After being physically attacked and having someone grab at my healing arm, try to throw me in a headlock and physically drag me out of the bar while I had my arm in a sling as my shattered scapula healed (I escaped all four of his headlock attempts, and he should thank God I chose not to reverse on him. For one, I wasn’t going to let him drag me out. For two, I was a class A Varsity wrestler that also participated in Greco-Roman summer training through Grand Island Senior High in the year of 2000. For three, I wasn’t going to leave without my backpack (IYKYK, it’s an Army thing). Lastly, be warned that if someone starts a fight with me.. I’m the Army lower enlisted version of Jack Reacher. I was individually mandated along with 3 other people in my unit of 48 to be personally and individually expected to figure out how to turn anything I have access to into a weapon which I could use to permanently neutralize anyone or thing (yes, I have received training in how to fight dogs) in my path as I militarily execute a plan of action to free my fellow battle buddies and commanders from hostile control if we had all been captured and all of our firearms had been confiscated. Additionally.. I have the capability to create a training regimen in Hand to Hand Combat and in the past (during mobilization for deployment to Iraq in 2006) have conducted large scale training exercises involving a company (around 300 people) of soldiers in how to defend themselves if they no longer had a firearm. If you think of Army soldiers as being able to defend themselves capably with their hands, think of me as the Army soldier who trains other Army soldiers in how to defend themselves to the death (with full PowerPoint presentation step by step instructions) with their bare hands.. if, their weapons have happened to have been confiscated.
I trained men like that, who were Army soldiers, so that they could free their commanders if need be. I exist, out of need.
The next week when I went in, I was refused service here by Demi..
I’d like an apology—but I don’t expect much from the folks involved—and I won’t be walking back through that door. Expect to see me at a dance, and don’t expect to find a better dance partner. There are people who frequent this place who don’t respect boundaries or decency. For someone like me, who served this country and returned to live in peace, that crosses a line.
Ladies, be mindful. I say this not to stir trouble, but to give a heads-up. If someone like me, physically visibly injured and minding my own business can be targeted, imagine how you might fare.
I’ve seen a lot of the world thanks to the Army. I came back here to find peace, not conflict. You can easily find me on the Eastside.. just look for the green house with a peace sign; or, flag me down while I’m cycling. I invite you, to. If you’re ever looking for good company or safer conversation, flag me down. I’ll always make time for people who walk in respect; and, if you ever need help or defended.. few men on Earth could ever stop me from defending you when/if needed.
