If Black Cat Ice-cream isn’t in the cards, Over the Top is a fantastic alternative! While their flavors might not be as wildly unique or change as frequently, the ones they offer are truly delightful. Plus, the staff are always friendly, and the prices feel fair.
My absolute favorite thing about Over the Top is the adorable free mini “top-hat” scoop of ice cream they add to every order. It’s such a fun way to sample a new flavor each visit without sacrificing your go-to choice. It also lets you get creative and see how different flavors might pair together! Definitely worth a visit for a safe, tasty and enjoyable ice cream experience that is consistent.
If I had to offer any feedback I’d like to see them get a little more creative and unique with their offerings instead of playing it safe. More crazy flavours and more frequent flavour swaps would be cool. I want to see flavours that make me to (wtf! That’s weird, I need to try that!).
And to be honest also, I wouldn’t mind if they were just a tad more generous with their scoops. My last visit they weighed our scoops before serving which is not a big deal generally but customers shouldn’t see that at the very least!

Over the Top did an excellent job serving ice cream at our Ventura Edge rollout! Their setup was professional, the staff was friendly and efficient, and everyone loved the variety of flavors. The service added a fun, festive touch to our event, and we received great feedback from attendees. We’d definitely invite them back for future events!

As an ice cream fanatic, this is one of the best ice cream places I have EVER been to. Not only is the service wonderful every time, the restaurant is very clean, they have a drive thru, and the ice cream itself is phenomenal. This is my favorite place for ice cream by far! The ice cream flavor matches the name so accurately that it’s a little uncanny.
Personally, my family always goes for the lemon cheesecake, twixted sister, or apple pie. The rotating flavors are always fun to give a try, which makes the topper such a great innovation. This is a must try.

Love it!! Cutest local ice cream parlor! Delicious homemade ice cream and you get a free tiny scoop of anything you’d like to try, on top of the scoop you order. The Banana is exceptional, the buttered corn was odd but I can see how it’s a hit at the state fair! Fantastic homemade waffle cone!!

First & only visit. This is a nice little ice cream parlor. Very clean & light & bright. Expensive. A root beer float and a waffle cone for over $13.00 They discontinued the scotcheroo shake, which was the reason we went in the 1st place….the famous scotcheroo shake. My husband can’t navigate the State Fair, which apparently is where their scotcheroo shake became famous. Then they discontinued it? Even though we live a couple of hours away, we go that direction often. If they bring back the scotcheroo shake we will probably make an effort to get there otherwise no.

Came here for the seasonal sweet corn ice cream but it was September 1 so the flavor was discontinued. Understandable. I tried the September flavor-of-the-month instead which is Tipsy Bee. It’s a honey-vanilla ice cream with bourbon-infused honey cake and chocolate-covered honeycomb. I also got a scoop of the apple cobbler. Very, very good ice cream. And so many gluten-free and vegan options for my friends! The kids behind the counter are awesome and answered all of my dumb questions with patience.

Great ice cream shop in the Des Moines area. Love the topper scoop. Very unique. Definitely must try the flavor of the month. It is always interesting. Outside seating available. Staff is friendly and helpful. Haven’t had a bad experience yet.
