On my first visit to California this year, I stumbled upon a BBQ joint serving California Craft Barbecue. As someone who has travelled all over the US for over three decades sampling Barbecue I had to try this style of Barbecue myself. Oak and Ember is right across the street from the famous Simon-branded outlet mall, Ontario Mills. Since I was going shopping anyway, I stopped by Oak and Ember. The restaurant was just starting to fill up, and I sat at the bar. After looking through the menu, I decided on their Smoked and Fried Chicken Wings with a dry rub and sauce on the side. The wings were piping hot as they just came out of the fryer, and were hot, crispy and had just enough flavour in the rub to make them a very good starter. My main course on this visit was the Brisket, cuz I love brisket, and brisket tenderness and smokiness are signs of how good the food is. The half-pound portion was served with pickles, pickled onions, and a teaser of corn bread. The brisket was very tasty and still tender and not dry at all. Overall, a good meal, at an affordable price and just the right amount of food. If you enjoy Barbecue and want to try ‘California Craft Barbecue’ give Oak and Ember a shot.
This is more of a Mexican BBQ Fusion, not a traditional BBQ joint. Would honestly have been a 2 star if the staff wasn’t so nice. Great bar for watching sports without the crowds.
Food:
The wings have no flavor besides the sauce and dry rub, seems like they were just fried without being seasoned. On the menu it claims to be smoked for over an hour, no signs on smoke ring nor flavor.
The ribs had a beautiful presentation, but that was all. You can tell that meat was relaying on the BBQ sauce and not working together to achieve ideal flavor.
The brisket was saddest point of the whole meal. Very dry, not tender, and no flavor. Honestly thought this was a piece of dried out piece of pot roast that they decided to serve. This was a very sad excuse for a brisket.
But the only good thing worth mentioning was the cocktails. They were delicious, bold with flavor and very refreshing. Only reason I’m willing to give it an extra star.
Atmosphere:
One good indicator of a good BBQ restaurant is when approaching the building you can smell smoke. In this case we did not, already a bad sign. The interior decor wasn’t what one would expect from a BBQ restaurant, the whole place gave the feeling of fine dining. Nice and clean.
Overall wouldn’t recommend.
Brisket tasted like chuck roast!
Whole chicken was a half chicken! (and no, the extra thin slice of chicken breast you hide underneath does not compensate)
Our waitress was overwhelmed when I asked for manager who never arrived.
Very disappointed!
