The restaurant was pretty small, so I would make a reservation for our next visit. That being said, the food was amazing, our waitress was very nice and fun, and the atmosphere was very relaxed and calm. We were there for a birthday, and we had a party of 12, so it was really good that we had a reservation.

So we went here yesterday for lunch around 2 o’clock, the place was completely empty, except for a few people sitting outside. We were welcomed by the hostess, who was very sweet and personable. We started off with the Asian calamari. It was very good and sweet with a little tiny of heat to every bite, including shredded cabbage, and carrots, and marinated cucumbers, which were fabulous! My husband for lunch got the teriyaki burger with french fries, great size plate of food, and he said it was very good and the burger was cooked perfectly. I got the bing bread with smoked salmon. It was just OK. I thought I was eating a big pancake. I wanted to try something different and I definitely got different. It was good, but I would never order it again. The bartender was also our waiter and he was great. He recommended a cocktail called the Xiao Rita, and it was delicious!

Overall, I would give this a 5 star experience. This was my first time at this restaurant but my wife is crazy about this place so I figured I would give it a try. There was a pretty significant delay before someone came around to us after we were seated (20 minutes). It took the manager coming around for us to actually be tended to. They were kind enough to give us some plum wine, our first round of drinks and an appetizer on the house to make up for this snafu. The concessions on the part of the manager were highly appreciated after the wait. I must say I was disappointed by finding out the main items I wanted to try on the menu were not available or no longer being sold altogether. The food here is PHENOMENAL, however and I would recommend that you give it a try if you’ve never been. The cocktails are artfully made. I would definitely go back again.

I tried Nomai for the first time tonight and I’m so glad that I did; I already want to go back! The vibe of the restaurant is calm and very aesthetic (right down to the amazing wallpaper in the bathroom- seriously, you gotta check it out) and the service was excellent. Our server, Kylie, was very attentive and had great recommendations. My family and I ordered a bunch of shared plates, and I enjoyed all of the different bao buns. And I could tell that even the things I didn’t try were good just from how they looked. I look forward to going back and trying some more things. Best dining option at Derby Street, in my opinion.

We’re loving Nomai! We’ve been twice. The first time, we sat at the bar and had a couple drinks and brunch. They had a DJ because (I think) they had an exercise class outside in front of the restaurant. The music was entertaining. And the service, food, & drinks were great! The second time, we sat at a table for dinner. We ordered the orange chicken chicken wings for an appetizer and for entrees we ordered the koji fried chicken and the steak fried rice. For drinks – margaritas and Pinot. Everything was great! The restaurant itself is beautiful and the service & food are excellent. The manager was making his way around checking in with people about their experience which was nice. I’m not sure if they ever have busy nights, but I hope that more people on the south shore stop in for the experience. The menu is small, which means everything is finely tuned to being exceptional. I do hope they switch the menu up (maybe seasonally) so there are more options. Derby Street restaurants have a reputation of never changing things up on their menu, but Nomai has plenty of potential and I hope it’s here to stay.

Been here a few times now and it’s consistently excellent. The menu changes slightly each time we visit keeping it fresh and interesting. The selections aren’t typically what you find in most places in the area and are more on par with a trendy Boston neighborhood. It’s a breath of fresh air on the south shore where most restaurants prefer to play it safe. Service has always been friendly and attentive. Water never goes empty and food and drinks come quickly. We’ll be back for sure.

The whole experience was underwhelming. I want to love it. The inside was pretty. Service was good . The portions was way to small . Every item about $15 and up. Oysters were $24 for 6. Prime rib was $115 and lack seasoning. Sea bass had one small piece. Grandma hau’s homemade carrot noodles was under cooked. Overnight, wouldn’t come back. The bill was $250 for a few small items

Great food and great staff. We came here to celebrate a friend’s birthday and didn’t make a reservation and the staff made sure to let us know there was a table open. Very attentive. They also have a great selection of Japanese whiskey.
