Everything here was absolutely delicious. The woman working (Viji) asked us what we liked, and how spicy, and made us custom plates. The chicken and lamb curries, fish rolls, creamy jackfruit and tapioca pudding were especially good, I can’t wait to go back.

Yum!! Authentic!! We ordered a lumprais special with mutton and coconut sambal. No frills place but amazing food and great service as they continually checked in with us to make sure we liked it / were eating it correctly.

I came a little bit too early, so I could only try their kottu rotti and fish roll. But both dishes were divine! The kottu roti was one of the best I’ve ever had, and definitely the best so far in the US. This establishment is halal!

This place is amazing. I really struggle when I don’t feel like cooking but I want homemade food, and this little spot with sweet Viji, the owner, is absolutely what I’ve wanted for a while. The food and homemade drinks were delicious and REAL. Feels and tastes so healthy and good! I am so content, was like being in Viji’s house having a meal straight from her kitchen. A feeling of home comes with the food. A hearty meal for real! I will be back again and again.

Curries taste really complex and delicious. Vegetable Kottu Roti was also great, laced with curry leaves and green chilis. Viji (the owner) was super nice and helpful! Loved everything I tried.

Why has it taken so long for me to try this place? I needed something spicy on a hot and humid day. As soon as I walked in Viji made me feel welcome. I took the suggestions of many posters here and let her make a plate for me. Everything was spot on delicious. I’ve never been a fan of beets but they were my favorite thing on the plate today.

Many restaurants in New York can rightly boast of their ability to recreate the aromas and flavors of a particular locale’s gastronomy, but how many can claim to replicate the inimitable interpersonal interactions that define a given region? Viji akka does just that at this delightfully welcoming establishment. From the moment we walked in and exchanged our first “வணக்கம்” (greetings), time speed up and we suddenly felt that we’d known each other for years in Jaffna, Chennai and beyond. I’ve not been this enveloped by Mother Tamil since leaving India. Viji, her staff and nearly all her customers spoke to one another in Tamil. (Viji akka was, of course, happy to converse in English, Sinhalese or even Spanish to those not fluent in Tamil.) Thank yous were நன்றி, delicious food became அறுசுவை and we were அக்கா (sisters), not strangers, to one another. The dishes are firmly rooted in the foodways of Sri Lanka’s Tamil community, but those who have spent any time in Tamil Nadu will certainly recognize the culinary flourishes common to both sides of the Palk Strait.

I just visited New Asha Sri Lanka Restaurant for my 2nd time and I LOVE this place. The food is incredible! (friends recommended this place). I had the chicken, vegetables, and rice PLATTER. $15 and it can feed 2 (or more) people! I don’t know what Viji does to make the food SO DELICIOUS…. magical spices, maybe? I was told by my friend to “Just let Viji pick the food for you!” And so I did! the platter was huge and amazing and EVERYTHING in there was off-the-charts SCRUMPTIOUS! how many more synonyms can I use to say DELICIOUS?? there are not enough words! I am SO happy I know about this place and I will be going weekly! Thank you Viji for all you do and for the LOVE you put in the food! THAT is her extra magic ingredient, LOVE! — Cynthia

This place has some of the most flavorful, vibrant Sri Lankan food I’ve ever tasted in my life. Even though the restaurant is small, it’s clearly very well cared for as if it’s a relatives kitchen that’s invited you over for some amazing food. When I walked in, the woman at the counter introduced herself right away and struck up a sweet but non invasive conversation. I took all of her recommendations and that was definitely the right move – especially for the creamy jackfruit and fried chicken. Hands down the best item at the restaurant though is the homemade vegan tapioca pudding. I’m not a vegan, but I do enjoy coconut milk, and this has to be one of the best desserts in the NY area. If you pass this place up while looking for Sri Lankan food on Staten Island, you’d be making a grave mistake.

If I could give this 10 stars I would. This was one of the best food experiences I’ve have had in all of NYC. Viji treated me like a Queen and I was lucky enough to try many different items. Every flavor was incredible, especially the goat and the eggplant. I can’t wait to tell everyone I know about her and this restaurant.
