Their preset menu is such a unique experience–it changes every time you go, so you’re always in for something new and exciting. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the staff goes above and beyond with top-notch service.
Jasen, the owner, was incredibly professional and knowledgeable about every dish that came out. I really appreciated the care and detail that went into the entire experience. I thought the pre-meal portions would be small, but I was actually full before dessert even arrived!
They also have a full bar with cocktails, mimosas, a nice selection of whiskeys, and wine. I was pleasantly surprised to learn they offer dinner too, and even more excited to find out they do take out bento. That’s a huge bonus since our office often orders for meetings and gatherings–and they’re conveniently located close to the Pier.
What really stands out is the variety and creativity in each course. Everything was flavorful, beautifully presented, and very reasonably priced considering the amount and quality of food. On the way out, we noticed snacks made and sold by the owner’s wife–we grabbed a few, and they were delicious!
Nami Kaze has definitely become one of my go-to restaurants. Highly recommend checking it out!
– For appetizers, we shared the crunchy crab roll, Japanese eggplant, and ulu tots. The roll fell apart easily and lacked flavor. For entrées, we tried the lobster Caesar salad, special kampachi, miso black cod, and kampachi crudo. The salad had only two small pieces of lobster and was overloaded with croutons. The crudo was just average, though the black cod was quite good.
– There was a long wait between courses, and the biggest letdown was dessert. We ordered two cookies, only to receive hard, pre-packaged cookies that tasted stale—definitely not house-made. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.
The beet salad was good but not as exciting, granted I’ve had many a beet salad in my life and at this point they tend to blur together. I’ve also had many a chawanmushi and generally found it underwhelming but this fine place gave me the first chawanmushi I’ve loved. They were generous with the lobster which scored some easy points but even beyond that it was a beautiful thing, the radish and greens kept it interesting, egg was egging. I was a big fan of the mix summer roll too, very fresh and bright with that holy peanut sauce LORD one of mankind’s greatest inventions really.
For mains we split some sushi, had the amber jacked, tsunami and pika-chuna roll and again they were all delightful, thoughtfully done, hit the spot. The good times continued into dessert. I don’t know what this lemon thing was and it was slightly too cold (messed the texture a little) but it tasted like heaven so none of us really cared. The matcha cheesecake paired well with it there was however I think a mix up because there was supposed to be cream on top and it was just straight up blue cheese, the only error of the night and not one that really put us off in the slightest because overall! The food was damn good and the service was even better. Highly recommend. Don’t forget to try the eggplant
Food was interesting, because of “fusion” but tasty. Pricy. Like, I’d probably opt for the lobster salad than the noodles for my main entree – you seem to get way more lobster.
The specialty rolls they suggest don’t need shoyu – I could taste the flavors, but very light.
The dessert menu sounded delicious, and interesting, but we didn’t save room.
Service was great, considering the night was not busy.
Our check was split three ways. Pay with cash if you want to not be charged an extra 3% for the credit card processing fee.
*they have the option to order from your smartphone. Personally I don’t like that, but it is efficient AND the staff is happy to take your order the good old fashioned way.
First, I didn’t realize they’re right across from Nico’s, for some reason I thought they were downtown/Chinatown area. Because we came when they opened at 9 am, we had our pick of parking. My friend said there’s parking in back of Nami Kaze but the gravel lot in front of Nico’s was wide open.
It’s a very unassuming entrance so I was surprised by how spacious and airy the dining room is. There’s counter seating, some booths, high tops, and even a private room that can hold up tp 24.
Service was top notch, with great pacing from our server, and the food matched the service. We had the. Coconut French Toast, which had so much going on it shouldn’t have worked but it absolutely did. Love the coconut tapioca, which I could’ve eaten by itself.
We split that as well as the People’s Choice, which offers a combo meal of poke and and ginger fried chicken. It was a little pedestrian visually compared to the French toast but tasted fantastic.
Such a great dining experience, will be coming back to try dinner!
