The best place you could go for the price. The stakes are genuinely decent. The price is fair for what you get. Salad bar, you get one pass with your meal. The atmosphere is amazing, It’s a great old place. The service has always been great every time we’ve been, they are tentative to your needs, but not pesty. The place is clean and friendly. again for the price, you cannot beat it.

If you want the quintessential Texas steakhouse, this is it. Steak dinner prices were competitive with HEB grocery store steak prices! Huge portions and consistently great food. Family friendly, good for groups or date night. Enough vegetarian and alternative options to cater to everyone.

While I had been once before, the Mrs hadn’t so we decided to take the trek from Shiner up to Winchester for lunch at Murphy’s.

Very nice place with some ice cold Shiner beer on tap.

I got the lunch special of chicken fried steak while the Mrs decided on a 6 oz ribeye. Boy howdy let me tell ya, neither one disappointed!! In fact we couldn’t believe her steak was a 6 oz since it looked twice the size (but we confirmed with waitress).

It was seat yourself, but service was quick and friendly.

Take that drive out to Winchester. You got this!!

The atmosphere is great and the food is great. We went there today for our lunch dinner the portions are so large it fills you for the day. We started with the mushroom appetizer and I had the 6oz. Ribeye w/baked potato and ordered steak medium rare and it was cooked perfectly and juicy and tender my partner had the seafood platter and it was huge. LG. Shrimp and catfish fillets and it came w/ a crab cake and it was the best crab cake I have eaten very moist and lots of crab in it the best I have ever eaten. I could have made a meal of them. The prices are very reasonable. If you want a great steak done right go to Murphy’s. You won’t be disappointed. Kudos to the chefs.

The steakhouse was great. The food was hot, fresh and the portion sizes were large. The service was amazing and they were very prompt even for a large group

Steaks are not PRIME but seasoned and grilled perfectly. Neat out of the way place in an historic building. We’ll worth the drive. Scenery is great as well.

Dear Murphy’s Steakhouse,

I’m writing to share my experience at your restaurant on April 19, 2025. We’ve been loyal customers, making the trip from Austin, Texas, for our past three visits – all based on positive word-of-mouth recommendations. Today, however, marked a significant departure from our previous positive experiences.

We arrived at 4:15 PM and were served promptly at 4:30 PM. While the steak was delicious, as it has always been, the service unfortunately fell drastically short of expectations. After ordering, our initial requests were met, but thereafter, our table remained uncleared, and we weren’t offered drink refills or checked on to see if we needed anything further. We dined surrounded by dirty dishes from our salad bar, a situation I’ve documented in the attached photographs. Our entire dining experience lasted only 21 minutes, ending at 4:51 PM.

This wasn’t simply a matter of inattentive service; it felt as though our patronage wasn’t valued. We believe the waitress was named Mary Cassie (as per our receipt), but I’m unsure if this is correct. While we are committed to leaving a fair tip that reflects the value of our food, in no way does this reflect the service quality we received and deserved.

I’m hesitant to say whether I will return. While your restaurant boasts excellent food, the inconsistent service is a major concern. My hope is that this feedback prompts a review of your service standards, ensuring all customers – regardless of their perceived tipping potential – receive the level of attention and care they deserve. We chose your restaurant because of its reputation; we would appreciate your response and efforts to address this matter.

We’ve have eaten here several times before, it’s a destination ride from Sugar Land. They always had outstanding food and service. Not sure what happened, this time. The chicken fried steak was dark and tough as a boot. The fried catfish was also “dark” fried, and the sides came out cold. Service was also slow, not unfriendly but not the usual happy to serve you. Hoping they didn’t change ownership. Maybe they just had a bad day cooking. Will give it another try, next time we’re out for a ride.

Our waitress was Ashlie, and she made our experience one of the best ones. My ribeye was cooked to perfection with the BEST seasoning. Ashlie took great care of us, making sure we had everything we needed. Our drinks kept coming on time. Once we were done, she recommended the banana pudding, AND let me tell you THAT PUDDING DIDN’T EVEN MAKE IT 10 MILES OUT. I WAS DONE BEFORE I HIT 71.

I’m surprised this place hasn’t been featured in more travel or food shows.

The historic building, taxidermy, low lighting, rotating dessert cabinet, and salad bar/bean bar combo feel like something out of a Cohen Brothers film.

The steaks and onion rings are fantastic. This place is truly a strange and wonderful small town gem.

If you are traveling off the beaten path, come here and have a steak.
