I don’t usually do this but food and atmosphere was amazing. From the Sunrise Selections I had Seasoned Country Style Potatoes, Scrambled Eggs with Hardwood Smoked Bacon and a Fresh Tropical Fruit Cup. My Husband had the Hawaiian Style Loco Moco. As Breakfast Accents we had Ham Steak Bon-in along with Butter Biscuits with Sausage Cream Gravy. Can’t wait to go again definitely recommend.

Modern Ohana, formally MIX, was a delightful surprise. As a big fan of Mix, I was worried about this change, but I must say that Modern Ohana is official in my “favorite restaurant” list of Ithaca.
The uplifting atmosphere created with the renovations were beautifully on theme with the new tropical direction of the restaurant.
We ordered a Blacked ahi tuna benedict and a Hawaiian loco moco and both were amazing quality, balanced in flavors and made with attention to detail. An amazing introduction into what was our first hawaiian meal, and it will not be our last at Modern Ohana!

Once again this restaurant keeps coming back with yummy and intriguing food options. I got the loco moco and the nutty banana pancakes, each were very good. I will be back soon for more.

The wait staff was friendly, the cocktails were good. The food looked like it was leftovers from two days ago. It was barely warm,it was very chewy, it tasted like rubber. Everything was great except for the food. If the chef just prepared the food, they apparently either wasn’t paying attention or like I said it was leftovers and they just warmed the food to get rid of it. I would recommend the establishment for cocktails but if you plan to get food I would make sure it was freshly made and I would ask if the chef could please pay attention while preparing it.

Beautiful restaurant and atmosphere. There is something on the menu that I was really looking forward to (teriyaki chicken with steamed broccoli) but apparently it’s for kids only (???). There was no way that they would let me order it. I was disappointed in the sliders, but the cocktails were delicious. I’ll give them another shot

We have always loved Mix and love the rebrand of Modern Ohana just as much. They are the best place in town for family breakfast/brunch. Haven’t tried the new dinner menu yet but I am confident it will be good! The new breakfast menu had some of their previous menu along with new things with a tropical twist. I had the parfait which was huge and delicious! Expensive like everything else in Ithaca but at least feels like the quality is worth it.

First impression: colorful tropical re-do, inconsistently applied. Servers’ attire lacked continuity with the theme, the music was 70’s funk pop instead of anything evocative of tropical climes.

Next impression: this was their first Friday night since the rebrand. Service was slow. The parking lot was full, but the large dining rooms were only at 20% occupancy. We were there 20 minutes before receiving our drink order and placing our dinner order. Our server hadn’t learned the extensive menu. She addressed diners as “Lovie”. The only familiar front staff was the bartender, otherwise all the staff we encountered seemed new not just to this location, but to food service.

The drink menu: lots of sweet fruity sugary options. My unsweetened pineapple juice based margarita with its limey spiced salt rim was clean-tasting and didn’t stint on the tequila in its kitschy tiki themed cup.

Appetizers: we didn’t order any, but the tempura chicken wings (marked gluten free) sounded yummy. I miss the tapioca bread rolls from the Mix days.

Dinner: We waited a long while for dinner, and the shrimp dish (curry butter something with broccoli) had a delicious curry sauce. We had to send it back though, because the shrimp arrived (in that yummy sauce) with their shells intact. The server’s first suggestion was that we should peel them ourselves and she’d bring us wet wipes. Her second thought was to take the plate back for correction, and the replacement boasted piping hot tender tail-on shrimp. By now the broccoli had been cooked to a pulp. Chef Mix came to our table for feedback and comped us a dessert.

The pineapple pork soft-shell tacos featured bright and fresh veggies and were accompanied by sweetish black beans and fried rice.

The comped unadorned 3oz scoop of mango sorbet was fresh and clean tasting and not too sweet.

There are some interesting looking Pacific seafood dinners on offer, but I wasn’t hungry enough for those tonight. Maybe another time.

Special Dietary Needs Awareness: the menu is marked for diners seeking gluten free, dairy free, nut free, vegetarian options, except the drink and dessert pages.

They’re making a heroic effort to remain viable in a food-forward town whose residents have modest budgets. I’m not convinced this is what the area’s been missing though.

We went to brunch the first day they reopened as Modern Ohana and dinner the first night as well. The new version is everything we loved about Mix with a tropical flair. The interior looks amazing and I especially like the new seating layouts. Some of the brunch offerings are mostly the same but there are even better additions. The hubcap-sized pancakes are gone but now you get two dinner plate sized ones instead! They are just as tasty! New omelets and specials mean that it will continue to be our favorite brunch spot. As for dinner- WOW. For appetizers we got the wings (crispy and sticky all at once) and the edamame. The dumplings were the best though- it was our first time having bonito flakes- that was a treat! I had the island pua’a duo- comes with 2 thin pork chops and a pile of smoky pulled pork as well as fried rice and the utterly delicious pineapple soufflé (honestly could eat that for breakfast or dessert anyday!). My hubby loved his bahn mi and my mom enjoyed the tropical take on a French dip. The sides were really good. And of course we got a couple of desserts- amazing as usual! The new coconut cream pie is superb! We will have a lot of fun trying the new tiki drinks and tasting all of the new dishes! Go try it out- it is a taste of the tropics without the flight!
