Checked out this diner on a road trip. We wanted to try something other than a chain. The restaurant is clean! The food was good but a little underwhelming with flavor. The serving sizes are generous. I wish I would have tried the ice cream!

Checking over an off the grid system My client/friend said, let’s go grab something to eat at this local place Mikes drive in over in W. Frankfort . I said, what do they have? They make all kinds of burgers, and they have their own homemade root beer. You have me sold at root beer. This is a unique place in that you can drive up in your vehicle And they come out and take your order car hop style, but you can’t get the frosty mug of root beer unless you’re sitting inside. So we went inside and oh that root beer. I don’t know if it’s unlimited, but I do know she filled my mug three times. I got the roast beef horseshoe, which was drowning in liquid cheese. And my friend got the fried fish sandwich which was, he said, nicely crunchy and flavorful. And did I mention the root beer? I’ll have to go back there to get a root beer float.
Or their chocolate shake #eatlocal #aurtravels

Excellent wait staff, very informative when you ask about the menu. We had the club with tater tots, a cheeseburger with cheese curds, and Italian beef sandwich with chili cheese tater tots. All the food was amazing. The homemade root beer was delicious and was worth the stop. The entire place was very clean which was great for us traveling through who appreciated a nice restroom. We would absolutely go back when traveling though again.

Ordered double burger, Italian beef sandwich with fries and chili tots and fried pickles. Burger bun was cold and dried out. Sandwhich was good, fries were ok, tots better at sonic. Wouldn’t go back. Waitress was good. Oh and tea was old and sour.

We experienced excessively long wait times for both drinks and food, and unfortunately, our food arrived cold and inedible. Throughout our dining experience, no server visited our table, prompting me to approach the counter to request drink refills and report the issue with our meal. The waitress, who was the sole server on duty, chose to step outside instead of attending to us. Upon her return, we reiterated our concerns and presented the cold food. Regrettably, she stated that she was unable to offer a solution due to limited staff, citing the assistance of only two high schoolers in the kitchen. Ultimately, we paid an excessive amount for uneaten food and were forced to dine elsewhere.

If you want fair food all year long, this is your place. Corn dogs, horseshoes, fried zucchini. And always get the homemade root beer in a frosted mug! Fast friendly service and decent prices.

My son and I aren’t from the area and stopped for dinner here on our way somewhere tonight. We were a bit nervous they were closed because there’s no recent activity on social media on their page/about them. But we tried them out and are so glad we did!

We decided to dine in. We walked in and the space was incredibly clean, we were greeted immediately by our friendly waitress, Kiarha, and she took our orders immediately.

Since we had never been here, we wanted to try-it-all, starting with the root beer made in-house. She brought it to us right away in frosted mugs and it was delicious.

Then she brought us our appetizer of cheese curds. These were incredible with great flavor and excellent cheese pull.

Finally, she brought us our meals of burgers and cheese fries. The food was hot, delicious, well-seasoned and it had huge portion sizes.

Our order was accurate, the service was incredible, and the atmosphere was super cool!

The waitress was very friendly, patient, and prompt!

I’m so sad they were slow and didn’t have a ton of business because this was an incredible diner, a gem hidden in West Frankfort.

The Italian beef was delicious (request the juice) and Lacey my server was a sweetheart, That is why they get the four stars. Their homemade root beer was really delicious. (you have to ask for a frozen mug). They had nice crinkle cut french fries my fave. I would prefer if they would fry them an extra minute or two to make them a little extra crispy and more of a golden brown color, that’s the purpose of a crinkle cut french fry. You know the old saying brown food taste better, I don’t like pale food. That’s my first time ordering I’m sure if I asked that they would fry mine extra crispy, they seem to be super nice people. So that’s my opinion on the food in service.

Let’s critique the rest of Mike’s just so you won’t have any surprises when you show up. You pull up and park and they have a menu board outside over the door. It has that 60s Brady Bunch or Partridge Family type vibe. Would have been cool to have outdoor speakers that would play some upbeat 60s and classic rock music. The prices are a little high but I tend to think that’s commonplace in Illinois, The beef in the Italian beef was a high quality beef, which could explain part of the pricing. I just moved here and it seems like everything has a 40% higher price. Aesthetically the place needs a little brightening up a facelift you might say, a little pressure washing and a fresh coat of paint. The place needs to be perked up. It was perky at one time, I can tell by the color choices that have since faded and are not so perky anymore. Beware of flies and this is not a Mike’s drive-in problem, it’s a West Frankfort problem. The flies are annoying in West Frankfort but maybe Mike’s can do something to deter them around their property.
My biggest criticism of all though was the ketchup, which the ketchup didn’t taste very good, but did taste like diner ketchup, if you like diner ketchup. I didn’t like whatever brand they used.
The squeeze bottle used for the ketchup along with the salt and pepper shakers that they brought out everything was so greasy and slimy. The containers were pretty slippery nearly sliding out of my hand which was gross and maybe after a day’s worth of use, they get that way… however, sanitation-wise they should be wiped down after every customer, so bring your hand gel or handy wipes. So in a nutshell good food, good service, place could be perked up, some upbeat 60’s music would be nice, control the flies and make sure to wipe everything down after each customer. That being said, I will be back for another Italian beef sandwich or I might try the BBQ pork next time. IDK Please don’t let anything I have written here keep you from going to this unique place. Just be prepared and know what to expect. That includes expecting good service and food.
