I give something 5 stars if I definitely plan to return. I’ve now been to two different menus, and I can definitely see myself going back again!

A very unique experience to say the least. The time and care the chef and his team put into each dish is phenomenal. The menu changes with the season, and seating is limited to 8 at a time, so few people will have ever had what you had. Go with an open mind to food because you will be trying something new and the flavors will be strong in a good way.

Merchant Roots is the best restaurant you’ve never heard of. We’ve been to two of their tasting menus (Color Theory, and The Great Trees) and both were incredible. The team puts an incredible amount of creativity into their entirely new menu every quarter, and weaving unique stories and themes in to each of the typically ~10 courses. Each dish is its own mini masterpiece. For example – with Color Theory, each dish centered around both the visual color but also the emotion the color evokes – for the yellow course, think a crispy yellow potato topping that feels and sounds like crackling Fall leaves.

This place is definitely unique as it offers rotating themed tasting menus that think outside the box. It might not be the most amazing in flavor, but the intent and creativity makes it a great experience. We went in July 2022 for the Mermaid Feast!

I don’t generally like fine dining, but I can genuinely see myself coming back here. The entire meal was themed nicely, with optional wine pairings (which I didn’t go for but still had a great time). The restaurant was intimate and can only fit 8 people total, tended to by very lively and funny staff. There are also nice surprises 😀 I deliberately chose photos that are a little lamer so that the surprises will actually be surprises, but you won’t be disappointed!

Incredible experience here that is one of a kind. Extremely creative menu themes that change every quarter and super passionate chefs. Definitely recommend reserving one of their dinners at least once. The first time I went was for Around the Summer in 42 Plates which convinced me to join their chef’s circle for early access to future reservations. The following chef’s circle meeting we went to where past dishes were served and future themes were voted on was also super fun.

A truly exceptional dining experience: everything is done with so much attention to detail and so well themed; the food was fantastic and very different approach than you know from other places; the wines seemed really interesting and very good (I was actually sad for once I didn’t go for the pairing). What was really nice was that you could tell how much the young staff cared about every little detail and how much love and effort was put in all. Overall, it was probably one of the most fun ways I’ve enjoyed fine dining in ages — a place I couldn’t compare with any other. Would come back again and again for a new theme.

Maybe we had higher expectations especially we made a reservation a few months ago, or maybe the theme that we didn’t like it. We expected more variations of fish/shells but we noticed the Mermaid feast was mostly focused on seaweeds. So overall, it was so so salty. Not only the seaweeds, but also all the other dishes. We kept drinking water/wine to dilute the salt level. And tbh the service definitely didn’t meet the level of the price that we were paying. Not so professional we found compared to other similar fine dining restaurants in the bay area. A bit disorganized vibe and ambience – sad that we couldn’t really connect to the experience the restaurant was trying to relay on.

One of the few “fine dining” places where I’d say I would come again for another menu rotation. It is definitely on the pricier side but it was a great and unique experience. I wonder what other seasonal menus will bring and if it will be distinctively differently from this one.

The year has changed so much and we’ve finally gotten the opportunity to experience a very enjoyable #tastingmenu from Merchant Roots. They have a rotating themed menu every three months and its currently two outdoor tables up to 4 persons each available via online reservations only. The outdoor decor is beautifully matched to the theme. I had forgotten to take some photos of the design, being to distracted by the dinner. The current theme: The #Elements …courses:
