Portions are not small, but not huge either.
The same piece of sushi might be significantly different in size and contents. Not cool especially if you share the roll.
One of the rolls, that came with shrimp tempura inside was missing the shrimp in 3 pieces (in the middle) the shrimp felt like it was cooked 2 days ago.
The eel looked and tasted awful. I always order rolls with eel at sushi restaurants and I cook it at home as well. It was not even shiny as it should be and moist. Wouldn’t eat it another time for free.
None of the fish felt very fresh. Maybe I’m spoiled with almost every sushi place being great in San Francisco?
Service ok
Even though, we waited VERY long for our order! There was only one other single person in the restaurant.
The plates they serve sushi on should be in trash long time ago. All chipped.
No complimentary green tea
But they give you 2 small pieces of frozen cheesecake (pretty good)
Will definitely not be back
I believe it’s one person making all the sushi, with the husband and wife (and possibly their son) helping serve! The atmosphere is warm, intimate, and genuine, making it such a comforting place to enjoy the food.
The sushi does take a little time since it’s made by one person, but it’s absolutely worth the wait. Everything is plated together, and so yummy.
Can’t wait to go back! Maru is truly a hidden gem in Austin!
Sushi and nigiri sizes are generous and larger than other places that I find.
Interior has retro art and decorations throughout. Atmosphere is 10/10
If you like sushi with a decent amount of fish, definitely check out this place. The fish was fresh, and we really liked the taste of the sushi rolls we ordered. We ordered the Happy Together and Geisha rolls—both were delicious. We also ordered Nabe Udon, which we really enjoyed. It had a rich chicken broth, and the portion was generous as well.
Be prepared to wait, as this is a family-run business operated by a husband and wife. In my opinion, it is a good choice if you are not in a rush or extremely hungry. If so, you will have a really nice experience since the food tastes great!
The stuffed mushrooms were amazing. The crispy shrimp and samari rolls were perfect.
And with the check came assorted cheesecake bites, one for each of us.
We really enjoyed it.
Charming husband and wife team holding down the fort, making the sushi, engaging with the entire clientele with an attentive waiter taking care of us throughout. Tonight was wait-free and casual.
The intimate size and generous portions combined for a truly pleasant and delicious dining experience.
